And surely, the trauma of watching every colleague die before his eyes had broken something inside him... hadn’t it?

But the truth is darker. Matthew is not Matthew. There were no survivors. The real Matthew is long dead. What walks beside you now is something else, biding its time, waiting for the perfect moment to claim you, to make you its mate, to fill you with its offspring.
