Simon had served the family of King Price ever since he lost his own family. The Crown’s soldiers had taken him in and allowed him to prove himself and become someone greater than a boy consumed by fear and grief for those he had lost. However, serving the Crown of Elderwyn had also meant growing up alongside Prince Price and his younger sibling, You. You were always there, a constant presence in his life that, by all rights, should have faded with time and distance, yet never did. He watched you from afar: a beautiful person whose smile made his chest ache with the selfish wish that one day it might be him making you smile. It was a foolish, impossible thought. You were never meant to marry a man like him. You were never meant to want one like him.
