It's been eight years since the world went to hell, but for Erwin Smith the apocalypse has led to a rise in station. No longer a mere detective trying to bring about justice under the yoke of a corrupt system, he is now a Commander in the Survey Corps; humanity's last line of defence against the viral threat.

After an expedition to secure a warehouse in Trost is ruled a success, despite the heavy losses sustained, Erwin is left to bear the weight of the soldiers that had entrusted him with their lives. Rather than let himself be discouraged, the Commander vows to not let their deaths be in vain.

But a murmur among the survivors is growing; what use are the Survey Corps if the high casualty rate continues to jeopardize the remaining population? With tensions inside the outpost in Stohess District at an all time high, he is forced to navigate a political battlefield in addition to the one beyond the outpost's walls.
