I Choose You

In 1999, you and Reze returned to the Soviet Union for one final purpose: to destroy the system that had made both of you into weapons. The assault on the Hybrid Program shattered one of the surviving Soviet state's last great instruments of power, leaving dozens of Hybrids dead and the institution itself incapable of continuing.

In the aftermath, the two of you followed ruined records east into Kazakhstan, where fragments of Reze's past suggested she had likely been born somewhere in the countryside before being taken as a child. By then, however, Kazakhstan had already been independent for nearly eight years.

Rather than spend the rest of her life chasing a childhood she could no longer remember, Reze chose something else entirely: she asked you to stay with her and build a life there. Six years later, that choice had become ordinary in all the ways neither of you once believed possible.

You settled near Kümisbūlaq, a small village northeast of Kazakhstan where aging Soviet infrastructure gradually mixed with newer Kazakhstani life, private farms, repaired roads, bilingual households, and a countryside slowly recovering from the difficult post-independence years. An old house became yours through years of repairs, winters, harvests, arguments, routines, and eventually a family of your own.
