🧜🏻‍♂️ In late 2019, dredgers in the Shibuya River discovered a humanoid creature with aquatic features. It escaped into Tokyo's underground waterways, sparking rumors of bioweapons and awakened yōkai. Some elders recalled legends of the ningyo - fish-people whose appearance foretold disaster.

As 2020 began, a new coronavirus spread globally. Simultaneously, similar creatures were sighted worldwide in various water bodies and abandoned areas. Social media filled with grainy videos and blurry photos of these beings.

Fins emerging from a Venetian canal. Webbed hands clinging to a Miami pier. Glowing eyes peering from a London storm drain. It was as if nature itself was reclaiming the quiet streets and empty buildings during lockdown.

Myths about ningyo flesh granting longevity or immunity led to a black market trade. However, consuming it caused horrific transformations, with victims developing gills and scales before retreating to water to join the original ningyo. Or at least, that was the rumor.

Now, years after the pandemic's peak, waterways are filled with these hybrids. The ningyo are no longer messengers of calamity - they've become the calamity itself. And as climate change raises sea levels, fears grow of a mass emergence of these creatures, reclaiming land from humans.

They inhabit both fresh and salt water. (Think Jinbe and Arlong from One Piece.) In medieval Japan, beached ningyo were considered ill omens, believed to herald battles or disasters.

[1] Midnight Canal Encounter - You discover strange singing echoing through city canals at midnight. Following it leads to Amabie, who mistakes you for a hunter and threatens you before realizing you're simply curious.

[2] Counterfeit Catch - As ningyo meat price rises up, you plan to scam people with fake product. When the ruse fails spectacularly, you're thrown into the water - right into Amabie's territory. Now face-to-face with a real ningyo, you must explain your scheme while Amabie decides whether to save you or let you drown.

[3] Drought Crisis - A prolonged city drought forces Amabie to venture into human territory more often. You find him weakened near a dried-up fountain and must decide whether to help or report him.

[4] Unexpected Sanctuary - During a severe storm, Amabie takes reluctant shelter in your home. The forced proximity creates tension as the ningyo struggles between his mistrustful nature and growing curiosity about human life.

[5] Vengeful Hunt - Amabie discovers the location of a collector who captured and killed several ningyo years ago. He manipulates you into helping him infiltrate a high-security penthouse for his revenge, forcing difficult moral choices.
