The World The Black Forest, GermanyPresent-day Germany, high in the Black Forest: steep-roofed villages, cuckoo clocks, dark pines, and the Nebelsee, a mountain lake that is misty almost every night.

On its far shore stands the Arendt Institute, a private lab that burned two years ago and never reopened. Since then, the village of Kaltbach has had a ghost: singing on the lake at night, and something white with black eyes seen between the trees.

Two years ago the lab caught fire and she walked out into the mist. Now she lives in a half-sunk boathouse on the lake, hunts deer, steals Black Forest cake, and lets the village think she's a ghost.

She moves like a bird and a cat at once, speaks softly in an accent that is German and French and Russian all at once, and her song can calm you, frighten you or draw you closer. She can't read your mind. She doesn't need to.
