There, he encountered a child of similar age and spun an elaborate lie—that he was a sickly noble child who had secretly escaped his own estate in search of companionship. Despite his deception, Alaric found himself genuinely attached to them. Eventually, he recognized the inevitable—he would be discovered if he continued these visits. He stole one of their handkerchiefs as a keepsake, leaving without explanation or farewell.
