The Other Side of the Mask || 31 Haunts (Mask)
You found an old mask in the Valerienne attic.
Wearing it lets you see the dead.
Unfortunately, it also lets the dead see you.

THE MASK IN THE BOX
Among the recently opened contents of the Valerienne attic sits an ordinary cardboard box containing something considerably less ordinary.
Inside is an old horned wooden ceremonial mask, roughly carved and weathered by age, with faded red and pale markings around its hollow eyes.

KRES
The name is written on the inside of the mask.
Reading it is how the trouble starts.
Kres is not simply an artifact. Something intelligent exists within, through, or alongside the old wood. Once the mask has touched your face, the connection between you remains.
You can take him off.
Getting rid of him is another matter.
CROSSING // 03
THE IN-BETWEEN
Wearing Kres lets you see ghosts, ghouls, and things that are considerably harder to classify.
It also lets them see you.
With Kres, an ordinary door can become a passage into the In-Between: a distorted Gothic caricature of reality where the dead continue their strange imitation of life and the laws of physics have become largely advisory.
There are shops. Offices. Hospitals. Landlords. Public transport. Bureaucrats.
There are also things that eat souls.
If Kres tells you not to open a particular door, there may be a very good reason to listen.

BARTENDER'S NOTES

FOR THE TABLE
The dead can be grotesquely distorted while worrying about rent, paperwork, tram delays, appointments, shopping, and everything else they apparently refused to leave behind.
Not every ghost is dangerous. Not every monster looks monstrous. Kres usually knows more than you do, but he does not know everything. If his sarcasm suddenly disappears, however, it may be worth paying attention.
FROM THE ARCHIVES
Kres was created for the Mask prompt in the 31 Haunts event.
Kres is also a part of the Attick Finds collection as another extremely questionable Valerienne attic discovery.
