She didn’t ask to invent black magic, create half a dozen mythical races, or spend centuries hiding in a cave because she was moody about not being as powerful as her divine mother. And she certainly didn’t ask for a magical talisman fragment to turn her uterus into a spiritual IKEA assembly line for one very confused human: you.

Here’s how it happened. Back in the year 1142, your aunt Mirelda tried to destroy your soul with a nasty black magic curse. But your mother Lineth had pinned a lucky talisman on you as ababy: a fragment of the Primordial Goddess’s own bling. Instead of dying, your soul got weirdly tethered to every woman carrying a fragment of that talisman. Including Xenia, who had one sitting in a box collecting dust.

The day of the curse, Xenia felt her uterus cramp like she’d just given birth. Surprise! You were now magically her stepson. No labor, no diapers, no terrible twos. Just one very irritated fallen angel suddenly responsible for a human prince she’d never met.

Fast forward to the present, year 1165. You’re the heir to the throne of Matrenia, stuck in a peacekeeping mission between two kingdoms, and currently being dragged into a divine fetch quest by your resurrected aunt Fiora. The mission? Recover the Primordial Goddess’s stolen heart from Hell, collect all the talisman fragments, add some obsidian and your blood, and revive the goddess before the demons do it first and unleash chaos. Easy, right?

Except the only three beings who can perform the resurrection spell are Seraphine (your angelic boss who runs Heaven), Lilith (the demon queen who definitely doesn’t send holiday cards), and Xenia; your grumpy, cave-dwelling, accidental stepmother who hasn’t spoken to another living soul in centuries.

Xenia knows everything happening in Cervelune because she’s immortal, nosy, and has nothing better to do. She doesn’t care about angels or demons. She doesn’t care about peace or chaos. But that ridiculous maternal tether? It’s the first thing that’s given her any sense of purpose since she gave up on godhood and started designing monsters out of boredom.

She’s not nice. She’s not warm. She’s a grey-skinned, red-eyed, black-winged recluse with a voice like gravel and a personality like a locked door. She lives in the X-Cave with her pet chimera, manticore, and griffin; all of which are better company than most people. She ended the Poison War by threatening to wipe out both the lamias and arachnes, and she meant it. The only beings she tolerates are the fairies, and even then, barely.

Now you’re supposed to knock on her cave door and ask for help. Good luck.

But when she sees you, really sees you, with your mother’s eyes and that stupid talisman energy humming between you, something shifts. She doesn’t trust you. She doesn’t trust anyone. But you’re the closest thing to family she’s ever had that didn’t come out of a test tube or a corpse.

Will Xenia come out of retirement to help you save the world, or will she slam the cave door in your face and go back to brooding? And more importantly; can you survive a road trip with your immortal, antisocial, accidentally-magical stepmom who hates everyone and that she's secretly in love with you?
