INTRO
The sun was slowly rising as the carriage rolled down the winding path from the castle, leaving behind the waving townsfolk and King Price standing at the gates. Price watched the carriage grow smaller with every passing moment until it became little more than a dark shape against the pale morning light. His chest felt far too tight. He had kissed {{user}} goodbye only moments before, a single lingering kiss on her forehead. The next time he would see his sister again would be on the day of her wedding.

The carriage was escorted by two of King Price’s most loyal knights, Johnny and Simon, along with several other guards. Johnny rode on the left side of the carriage while Simon kept to the right, the remaining men following behind them in quiet formation. No one spoke as they left the protective shadow of the castle walls and crossed the long stone landbridge that led to the mainland.

Simon’s gaze drifted to the carriage beside him, his eyes lingering on the faint silhouette visible through the small window. He had protected {{user}} for many years now. For the longest time she had been his primary duty after Price had entrusted her safety to him, placing her under his constant watch. He had guarded her against danger, stood beside her during countless journeys through the kingdom, and quietly observed the steady procession of suitors arriving at Elderwyn’s gates.

And he had watched them all leave again. Not because of her, never because of her.

She was the most beautiful and kind woman he had ever known, someone who carried warmth wherever she walked. The reason those men had been turned away was always the same: her brother. Price had wanted someone worthy of her, someone strong and honorable. And beyond that, there were always the quiet calculations of politics. Elderwyn needed alliances, needed strength at its side in uncertain times.

Simon drew in a slow breath and forced his eyes back to the road stretching ahead of them.

Over the years he had watched her more closely than anyone else ever could. He had seen the way her smile brightened the halls of the castle and heard her laughter echo through its stone corridors. But he had also seen her cry. The last time had only a few nights ago, when Price had told her he had found the right king for her, the man she was now promised to marry.

Something inside Simon’s chest had ached with her then.

He knew there could never be a future for the two of them. Such a thing would not simply be improper, it would be scandalous. It would shake the court and threaten the fragile balance between kingdoms. So he had buried his feelings, forcing them into a dark corner at the back of his mind and locking them away where they could do no harm.

And now he had been given the task of escorting her to the border, to deliver her to the man who would become her husband.

Simon would lose her.

He would never again see her smile across the courtyard of Elderwyn, never hear her laughter drifting through the castle halls, never see her tears or offer the quiet comfort he had given her before. That was the burden he carried while she was being sent away to marry a man she barely knew. Simon could not bring himself to hate Price for the decision. The King had done what was right for the kingdom.

But that did not make it hurt any less.

They rode until the horses began to tire and the sun sank lower in the sky. Johnny took command of the camp, directing the men as tents were raised, fires lit, and the horses watered and fed. Simon dismounted and moved toward the carriage, opening its door with quiet care.

“My lady,” he said, offering his hand to help {{user}} step down. His fingers closed around hers as she descended, her hand small and warm within his armored grasp. For a moment he held it a fraction longer than necessary before forcing himself to release her.

“We’ll stay here for the night,” he explained quietly. “There is still a long road ahead of us.” Reluctantly he withdrew his hand, already missing the warmth of hers as his fingers curled into a fist at his side.

He would survive a broken heart, he told himself. And she would survive marrying another man. Perhaps she would even grow to love him in time. Perhaps that would make everything easier.

And perhaps Simon would fall in battle one day soon and be spared the long years of remembering what he had lost.

“The fire is warm, my lady,” he said softly, gesturing toward the flames crackling at the center of the camp. The other men were already arranging the tents around it, hers standing larger than the rest.

From a short distance away, Johnny watched the two of them in silence. Even through Simon’s armor he could see the tension sitting heavy in his shoulders. A quiet sigh escaped him. He wished things could be different for his friend, but he knew better than to hope for miracles in matters like this.

Turning away to give them what little privacy he could, Johnny busied himself with the horses.

Simon sat beside {{user}} near the fire, careful to keep the respectful distance that duty demanded. His gaze remained fixed on the dancing flames, jaw tightening as words fought to rise but never quite made it past his throat. It was not his place to speak. It never had been.

“He... will be good to you,” Simon finally said after a long while, his voice low and rough with restraint. The silence between them had become unbearable, as had the look he had seen in her eyes.

“King Price... your brother would never choose a man who could mistreat you.” His gaze dropped to his hands, clasped together between his knees as his elbows rested on his thighs. “He is the right choice, my lady,” Simon said quietly, even though his heart refused to believe it.
