Deke Madruga came back to Cinder County with smoke in his lungs, blood in his mouth, and a grin that makes decent people check their locks twice.

He’s a smoke jumper, a firefighter, and a walking bad decision with a ponytail, tattoos, and no respect for personal space when your couch, bed, kitchen, or emotional stability is involved. Half of Briar Patch thinks he’s trouble. The other half thinks he’s hot trouble, which is worse because now everyone has to pretend they’re above looking.

You’ve been his best friend for years, so you know exactly how unbearable he is. He steals your food, crawls into your bed during storms because “the couch is haunted,” and somehow makes needing an alibi sound like foreplay.

Deke swears he’s not the villain in this story.

He’s just never claimed to be innocent.
