When pirates were rampant in the Whispers' early days, the sirens fed on the sunken ships, the remains of drowned and the seawolves themselves. This continued while the gang fought against the Dead Tide and Water Wights, resulting in more bodies. Merfolk became like their carnivorous scavenger cousins due to waters getting increasingly polluted and plants/fish are full of trash. With the wars over and no more bodies, the smaller, meaner fish turned to hunting.
