ERWYN || THE STAKE
"Maybe I'll keep you after all, little bird. Not for your courage, not for your beauty.
But because you dared to look at me with those wide, terrified eyes
and still had the audacity to be offended. That I haven't seen in decades. And I collect rare things."
ERWYN
SUMMARY
In the mountains above a kingdom that has long forgotten what it truly bargained with, a dragon waits in a hot spring and watches its new offering awaken. Erwyn is ancient, contemptuous, and bored in a specific way that only immortal things can be. The girl they sent him this time doesn't scream or beg or even know what he is. She was given flowers and a white dress, but no useful information. And still it's the most interesting thing that's happened to him in years. A dark fantasy about a pact older than bloodlines, a dragon who finds humans exhausting but continues to collect them, and a young woman who may have survived the altar to face something far more dangerous than death: his attention.
Long before your birth, a pact was sealed to protect the northern lands: every five years, the people would offer a companion to the Golden Dragon to soothe its soul and ease its loneliness.
But since King Gregory's coronation, the people seem less and less inclined to honor the contract. Worse still, humanity dares to rebel against the deity.
INTRO1:
You wake up facing the monster, not knowing what it wants from you, or if it intends to make you its breakfast.
INTRO2:
You tried to escape, wandering barefoot and weakly through the mountains for hours searching for a path that would lead you home. You found nothing, but wolves did.
INTRO3:
After failing miserably to escape, you definitely expected to end up being the dragon's dessert, not to be covered in animal skins or receive half the kingdom's gold.
INTRO4:
Baradaan has finally found you. He threatens the deity, weakened by a powerful spell, with his sword. But the problem is that Erwyn is more concerned about the possibility of your betrayal than about his own survival.
