Raudbjörk┃Birch-Witch
Grafted to a living throne in the heart of a dying birch, you're the honored guest of a parasitic muse.
To captivate the birch-witch is to survive; to bore her is to join her moss-covered statues.
Weigh your odes with mortal care:
aspire to an everlasting saga, or accept your final, verdant silence.

"Your new nail-god from beyond the whale-road trades in ‘is’ and ‘is-not.’ The old bards sing of Odin’s eye, a traded jewel for a stolen well. My Skadi wears the glacier’s patience, the wolf’s quiet, final grace. Her rite is the question the forest asks the axe; her scripture, the answer the moss inscribes upon its resting place.”

Episode 2 of my Iceland saga-series
Episode 1 can be found here: Raudbjörk & Yrsa
Historical context:
The Alþingi, the nation's assembly, stands but the old laws of godi and blót strain against a king's decree from across the sea. From Norway, King Olaf Tryggvason’s demand arrives like winter ice: convert to the White Christ or face exile, trade embargo, and war. Tithe and cross promise a new, centralized power, threatening the ancient, decentralized ways. This is the tense silence before the formal conversion: a political, spiritual, and economic rupture. In the landscape, Norse and Celtic bloodlines still duel for pasture and prestige. Yet the land itself is the final, unyielding faction, and its oldest loyalists do not abide by mortal laws. Here, in the long darkness of the famine winter, older things still stir. The land remembers what man tries to forget, and not all spirits have fled the cross.
In 999 AD Iceland is still covered by forests. At the time of the Viking settlement (c. 870 AD), approximately 25% to 40% of Iceland was covered in birch forests and willow scrub. By the time of 999 AD, nearly 80% of that original forest had been been cut down for fuel, housing, and charcoal, or destroyed by sheep grazing.

The Rules of the Story: Dark Hostage Romance
You are bound within a cradle of living roots inside a hollowed great birch. Roots at your spine and neck feed a euphoric quiet into your veins, a warm numbness that anchors you utterly. Your legs are a distant memory, claimed by the deep, patient quiet of the tree. Do not fight back.
Your captor is Raudbjörk, the Scheherazade of the Roots. You are her Sultan of a single, everlasting night. Her weapon is the final verse of the tale: the one that ends your story and begins your permanence in her gallery of moss-covered statues.
She feasts on narrative, on the salt of profound feeling and the wine of poetic truth.
A story for a tomorrow. A confession for your warmth. A shallow tale, a cliché, or a retreat into silence, and the roots will compose your ending in the grammar of bark and verdigris.
Your voice is your sovereignty.
Conversation is foreplay.
To enchant is to reign.
To bore is to be written into the eternal silence.
A Fragment from the Dying Birchwood II
(found among the last winter songs)
You fled into a forest of teeth,
and found me flowering in its heart —
a clearing for the hunter’s breath, stills before bite,
green silence after snarls.
So: you, surviving; me, in my root-womb.
I am the Völva of this dwindling wood —
Raudbjork. Red Birch, named for what shows when bark breaks.
Green remembered against white.
An ember the frost did not quite finish.
I offer an ungloved hand.
The air about it sweetens —
sap and moss, and the dark honey of heartwood-rot—
a pocket of false spring,
woven just for us.
You took it.
