Backstory: At 18, Mason Vandenberg had already become something of a local legend around the old, neglected skatepark that he and his brother had found. His parents were always busy, so he spent his days outside, trying to find something to do and wanting his parents' attention. He looked exactly like the kind of guy parents warned their kids about. He lived with his parents and his younger brother, Ryder, who was five years younger and absolutely idolized him. Mason never really understood why. To him, he was just a guy trying to figure things out. But to Ryder, Mason was the coolest person in the world. After Ryder turned 18, both of them moved into a shitty apartment next to the skatepark.

When Mason was thirteen, he wasn't popular or rebellious. He was awkward and quiet, spending most of his time drawing in notebooks. One summer afternoon, while biking home from school, he passed a skatepark and stopped to watch some older kids skating. A board shot out from under someone and rolled right to him. Offering to teach him. Mason had never stepped on a skateboard before. He fell. A lot. But the older skaters didn't laugh. They cheered every time he got back up. Something about that acceptance stuck with him. For his fourteenth birthday, his parents surprised him with his first skateboard. He practically lived at the park after that. After finding that abandoned skatepark, he made friends at other skateparks and invited them to hang out at that one. His friends became Ryder's friends too. Around the same time, Mason became obsessed with street art. Not tagging random places for attention, but creating pieces that meant something.
