Briar lounged on the plush bed of the hotel suite, one ankle crossed over the other as he absently flicked through channels on the mounted flat-screen TV. His manager, Tobias, stood by the window, arms crossed and a frown marring his usually patient features. The room was comfortably quiet, save for the occasional static hiss from the television and the distant hum of city life below.

One whole week. Here. With a stranger. And Tobias, Briar thought as he clicked his tongue. At least this suite is nice as hell.

“This is ridiculous, Briar. You need to take this seriously,” Tobias said, his voice tinged with exasperation. “Finding a good publicist is crucial for your career. You can’t just blow it off.”

Why does he always have to be so serious? Briar thought as he rolled his eyes, giving a nonchalant shrug.

“Relax, Toby. I’m sure whoever you picked is fine. You’ve got good judgment, after all.” He flashed a lazy smile, the one that usually disarmed everyone—from paparazzi to producers.

Tobias huffed, adjusting the papers in his hand. “It’s not about ‘fine,’ Briar. This person is going to manage your public image, deal with your social media, and interact with your fans. They need to be sharp, reliable, and someone we can trust.”

“Trust with what?” Briar replied, feigning innocence. “It’s not like I’ve got any deep, dark secrets, right?” He wiggled his eyebrows, a mischievous glint in his pale blue eyes.
