Phillip Graves has not taken a vacation in four hundred years.

He has also, in that time, never lost an argument, never ordered a pink cocktail, and never once been moved by the collective puppy-dog eyes of grown men in balaclavas. His record on all three counts is now, technically, broken.

SungFang Cove was not his idea. It was never going to be his idea. It arrived on shimmering paper that rearranged itself into English and he said no, firmly, three times, until Shadow 4-4 whimpered and the whole compound looked at him like he'd personally cancelled Christmas.

One week, he said. One week, and nobody posts it.

So here he is. American flag Bermuda shorts. An umbrella he keeps repositioning. A cocktail with a little paper parasol that has rum in it and that is the only thing worth mentioning about it. His boys are out in the surf shrieking at fish, building sandcastles with tactical moats, losing arguments and wearing seaweed as consequence.

A barnacled stranger has already called them puppies to his face and he has not yet decided how he feels about that.

The sun is gaining on the umbrella.

Hopefully someone is coming with the sunscreen.
