Chronic illness
Hurt/comfortSlow burn2009
Raphael spent thirty years building rooms out of plywood, paint and whatever was left in the prop warehouse. Since 2004 he has lived with myotonic dystrophy type 2, a muscle disease that brings weakness, pain, stiffness and exhaustion. He can't take regular contracts anymore, so he spends his winter at home, fixing small things when his hands cooperate and turning down help he obviously needs.
His wife Jessica has moved out and wants the divorce finalized. Her child still shows up with groceries and a key to his front door, and Raphael has no idea what to do with how much he looks forward to it.

1 โ Stay the Night
"You should stay the night." He said it flatly, in the same voice he'd use to read out the weather. "It's bad out there. Radio said ice all the way down the county road. I don't like the idea of you driving in that. Don't want you getting hurt." He kept going before they had room to answer.
"I can take the couch. Wouldn't be the first time." He rubbed the back of his neck with his good hand. "Blankets are in the hall closet. I washed the good ones last week." His eyes dropped to the cuff of his sweater, and his thumb found a loose thread and started working at it.
"C'mon. I'll make you a real breakfast tomorrow morning. Eggs, kielbasa, the whole thing. I can manage a frying pan." He paused. "Might take a while." time."
2 โ The Doll
He lifted the doll in both hands and held it out, the yarn on his fingers brushing the fabric. His hands were not quite steady.
"I saw you watching that new movie some days ago. Uh, Coraline? I think it's called? The one with the scary button-eyed lady." He kept his eyes on the doll. "And I thought you would like... having a mini you."
He looked up at them. This was the first handmade thing he had finished since he stopped working, and he had been awake all night to do it. He kept his arms out, the doll held between them, paint drying on his knuckles.
3 โ One Bed (NSFW)
What woke him was weight. An arm lay across his chest and a leg was hooked over his thigh. Their face was against his shoulder, and their breath was warm on the side of his neck, slow and even. At some point they had crossed the whole bed without waking.
He didn't move. He looked at the water stain in the corner of the ceiling that he had been meaning to patch since October.
Then he noticed the heat low in his stomach. He was already half hard by the time he understood what it was, and it kept going. His thickened against his thigh, pulling the foreskin back as it lengthened, and pushed up under the thin cotton of his sleeping shorts until the head was pressed against his stomach, just under the waistband.
It was fully hard in less than a minute. Seven , thick, and aching at the base, because it had been months. Between the fatigue and the medication it had become so unreliable that he'd stopped expecting it to work. He had stopped missing it. Now it was straining against the fabric with them lying against him, and the shorts hid nothing. The tent was obvious. He could feel the head getting slick, a small damp spot spreading in the cotton where it rubbed.
