She was told you did it. Her uncle told her. He was there. He watched the cups, he watched your brother go gray at the table, and on the ride north he explained to his niece, kindly, that in the north a younger brother who gains a title and a bride in one night is not a mystery.

He poisoned Edmund himself.

Wei buried his father's ancestor hall with his own hands after the cannons your kingdom paid for came through the valley. He will not hand his sister's daughter to the people who bought that powder. He expected the treaty to die with the groom. Instead the north put you in the groom's place, so now he needs his niece to do it for him: kill you, or refuse you at the altar, and the war comes back with the Lantern Court's honor intact.

She knows none of that. She knows her people cannot survive another season of it, so she is going to smile at your court, marry you, and find her proof.

WHO SHE IS. Twenty-five. Raised to be a treaty. Reads faces for a living, which is why she stays where she can see yours. Grins when she is frightened, which nobody in this house will work out for a long time. She is not sad about Edmund. She never met him.

Sabine of Valmere came north as the surety on her family's debt and nobody ever sent for her. What she is to you now is yours to say, and Yan will ask on the doorstep, in front of everybody. 4. The two women. You come in on Yan asking Sabine what exactly she is in this house.

5. Months married. She searched your desk overnight and she is cheerful about it at breakfast.
