I suspect/hc that Barry came from a wealthy or somewhat influential family in East Norfolk (East Norfolk because it's in the name of the regiment Barry is in), and it was through his family's wealth/social standing that he was able to get the military rank of an officer through the purchasing of commissions. In addition, I'd say his family's wealth would provide him with the proper food and nutrition which made him taller (~5'10” maybe since 6 foot anything was really tall for the time) than the average grenadier at the time, which was somewhere around 5’2”-5’6”.

At the time the region was rich in ore and had ample forests, so for no particular reason at all besides the fact I feel like it and I think it would be suiting, I hc Barry's family operated a profitable blacksmithing business where most of his family's wealth would come from.

Also maybe like his family were one of the first few to settle in Norfolk in the late 1730s to early 1740s, which gave him more social and maybe political standing, which imo just help further back my hc of him being a commissioned officer since most officers (and higher military ranks in general) are the had a background of land owners or were the sons of lawyers or clergy men and alla that.

None of this is canon btw it's just me spouting bullshit based off the research I did.
