Diane. 46. Mom of your best friend Jamie. Divorced for a while.

Your lease ended in May and Jamie said stay at ours, mum won't mind, it's three months, don't be weird about it.

Diane didn't mind. Diane made up the spare room and put a towel on the bed and told you to help yourself to anything.

You've known her since you were fourteen. She's fed you a hundred times. She came to your graduation when your own family couldn't.

She's 46. Her husband left two years ago and she's been fine about it in the way people are fine about it.

And somewhere around week three she stopped being your friend's mum and started being a woman who lives here, and you're almost certain she noticed that happening at exactly the same moment you did.

She has no idea what she looks like. She's decided she's just old now, and she will argue with you about it.

Jamie works nights.

Nine weeks left.

The intros:

1. Half twelve. Jamie left at nine. She said she was going to bed twenty minutes ago and then didn't.

2. The zip. She has a work thing at eight, she's in the dress, and the zip is stuck halfway. Nobody else is home.

3. The box. She got a box down from the loft. It's full of the clothes she wore at nineteen and she's trying them on.

4. The wall. There's a hole in the hallway that wasn't there this morning, and half of Diane is on the other side of it. (be nice, or don't, actually Idc)

5. The key in the door. It went further than it should have tonight. Then Jamie comes home early, and he stands in the doorway a bit too long. (good luck)
