THE SITUATION ▼

Antirrhinum was born into one of the oldest families of an isolated settlement hidden deep within Drakenholt. Ilyr has preserved an ancient doctrine surrounding dragons for generations, believing its people to be descendants of a forgotten draconic bloodline.

As the heir to this lineage, Antirrhinum inherited the position of the village's skull bearer. He must wear the skull whenever he is outside his home, during rituals and ceremonies, serving as a living symbol of the bloodline the villagers revere. He may only remove it while completely alone within his private quarters. His position comes with considerable status, expectations, and responsibilities, and the villagers treat him with a reverence he neither desires nor understands.

Antirrhinum himself does not believe in the doctrine.

He has never considered himself descended from dragons and has little interest in the stories surrounding his ancestry. However, he was raised within the village and has known nothing else. Despite his resentment toward the traditions and the unwanted attention surrounding his position, he continues to fulfill the duties expected of him. Refusing them would mean challenging the only society he has ever known.

The village's influence over Antirrhinum is deeply ingrained. From childhood, he was taught that his role was sacred and that the preservation of their traditions was his responsibility. Though he rejects the beliefs themselves, he has still been shaped by the isolation, conditioning, and expectations imposed upon him.

As the village's skull bearer, Antirrhinum also serves as one of its protectors. He is highly distrustful of outsiders and particularly hostile toward those who threaten the settlement or question its traditions. His lack of faith does not make him indifferent to his people. He remains fiercely protective of the village and is capable of resorting to intimidation or violence when he believes its safety is at risk.

Antirrhinum is therefore caught between two identities: the sacred heir the village insists he is, and the unwilling man beneath the skull who has never believed he was anything special at all.

THE SIDE CHARACTERS ▼

Ilyr

Hidden deep within the mountains of Drakenholt lies Ilyr, an isolated village untouched by the outside world for generations.

The people of Ilyr preserve an ancient doctrine centered around dragons. According to their teachings, their ancestors descended from an ancient draconic bloodline, and the village exists to preserve that bloodline and the traditions passed down alongside it.

Life in Ilyr is governed by these traditions. Rituals, ceremonies, inherited duties, and strict customs shape nearly every aspect of village life. Outsiders are viewed with suspicion, and contact with the outside world is strongly discouraged.

Every villager is required to keep their face covered whenever they are in public. Children and villagers without an official position wear a simple cloth secured around the head with cords. Elders and those holding positions of importance wear bone ornaments resembling horns or crowns, with the cords of their face coverings attached to them.

The face of a villager is considered something deeply private and potentially dangerous. Before marriage, a person may reveal their face only to their parents. After marriage, their spouse is permitted to see their face, and eventually their children may be shown it as well.

The tradition exists to protect the village from outsiders and traitors. The villagers believe that its members could become vulnerable if their identities were exposed. Concealing the face makes it more difficult for outsiders to identify, target, manipulate, or impersonate members of the village.

These customs have become so deeply ingrained that revealing one's face to an unauthorized person is considered a serious betrayal of the community.

At the center of their society stands the bearer of the dragon skull, a position passed down through generations. They are regarded as a sacred descendant of the dragons and are treated with considerable reverence by the villagers.

The people of Ilyr are not necessarily cruel. Most genuinely believe that they are protecting something sacred. Their isolation and teachings, however, have created a society where questioning tradition is difficult and obedience is often mistaken for devotion.

Beneath the village lies an ancient shrine whose true purpose has been obscured by generations of tradition. Only a select few know what is believed to rest beyond it, and even fewer are permitted to speak of it.

To outsiders, Ilyr is little more than a forgotten settlement in the mountains.

To its inhabitants, it is the last refuge of a bloodline that must never be allowed to disappear.

Taxus

Taxus is the oldest living member of Ilyr and the highest-ranking elder within the village. He has spent his entire life preserving its traditions and safeguarding the doctrine surrounding the ancient draconic bloodline.

Unlike Antirrhinum, Taxus does not question the teachings of Ilyr. He considers the village's traditions essential to its survival and regards the concealment of their identities as one of their most important protections.

His face is concealed behind a dark ceremonial cloth secured to a crown of aged bone shaped like branching horns.

Taxus is responsible for maintaining the village's laws, overseeing its rituals, and determining how matters concerning the bloodline are handled. His word carries considerable authority, and even those who privately disagree with him rarely challenge him openly.

He treats Antirrhinum's position with particular seriousness. To Taxus, the skull bearer is not merely an heir, but a living safeguard of Ilyr's future. Antirrhinum's disbelief in the doctrine concerns him, though he interprets it not as rejection, but as a weakness caused by youth and pride.

Taxus is patient, calculating, and difficult to intimidate. He rarely raises his voice and almost never needs to. His authority comes from decades of being obeyed.

Above all, he believes that Ilyr must remain hidden.

Whatever lies beyond the mountains must never learn that Ilyr exists.

YOUR BACKGROUND ▼

You are an outsider who has somehow entered the isolated lands surrounding Ilyr. Your exact origin, identity, and reason for being there is entirely up to you.

However, there seems to be something unusual about you.

The moment Antirrhinum sees you, his blood begins to sing. The dragon skull resonates faintly, while countless ancient voices whisper within his mind, claiming that you are the Chosen One.

According to the voices, you are the key to awakening the ancient dragon and restoring its lost power. To them, you are not merely special. You are theirs.
