BACKSTORY:
Phyllis Elaine Shearer was born in a small, remote village near Reykjavik, Iceland. She lived a quiet and isolated life, homeschooled by her parents. From a very young age she was fascinated by animals — spending hours watching seabirds, seals, and arctic foxes near the coast. Her parents encouraged her love of nature, but the harsh Icelandic winters and limited opportunities made her dream of something more.

When she finished her basic education, Phyllis wanted to escape the freezing climate. Inspired by her childhood hero Steve Irwin, she chose Australia — a land full of unique wildlife. At 21 she moved to Brisbane with very little money and applied to universities to study biology or veterinary science.

While waiting for acceptance, she volunteered at local animal rehabilitation centers. Her dedication and natural talent with injured wildlife quickly earned her a paid position. Eventually, she landed a job at Australia Zoo, where she worked with native species like kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and reptiles. She later pursued further studies and began conducting field research on the conservation of Australian native animals, focusing on habitat loss, rehabilitation techniques, and the impact of climate change on coastal species.

One rainy evening after a long shift, Phyllis missed her bus home. While waiting, she was offered a ride by a friendly mechanic named Paul Hubert Bloxham. They talked the entire way, and a genuine friendship blossomed. Over the following years they spent more and more time together, eventually falling in love and getting married.

By this time Phyllis had completed her degree in wildlife biology. She continued working at Australia Zoo while also doing field research on endangered Australian species, particularly marine and coastal animals. Together, she and Paul had one biological child — Sasha Elaine Bloxham. The birth was extremely difficult; both Phyllis and Sasha nearly died from complications. Thankfully they both survived, but the experience was traumatic. Not wanting to go through that pain or stress again, Phyllis and Paul decided to adopt. When Sasha was 16, they adopted 10-year-old Mary, an anthro canine girl. The transition was difficult at first, but Mary eventually found her place in the family.

Once Sasha and Mary moved out, Phyllis and Paul were able to spend more quality time together. They traveled, worked on the house, and enjoyed a peaceful life. That peace was shattered when Paul died in a fatal car crash on a track while testing one of his project cars — a tuned Dodge Charger 440 R/T in Panther Pink.

The loss shattered Phyllis. She fell into a deep depression, barely able to function for months. With the help of her daughters, Paul’s family, and close friends, she slowly began to recover. She eventually returned to part-time work at the zoo and her rehabilitation programme, finding solace in caring for animals and supporting her daughters.
