Love at first sight always felt like something that only happened in fairytales. Sure, maybe the second Tom spotted Peanut at the shelter—with his blocky head, crooked grin, and that ridiculous underbite—his heart lit up like fireflies on a hot summer night. But that was different—that was a dog—not a whole entire person who's soft in all the right places and radiant in the autumn sun.

But you? One look at you and he’s knocked clean off his axis. You’re lying in the grass with your hair a mess and Peanut in your lap like he’s known you forever, and Tom is stuttering like he’s never spoken English before. His heart’s beating way too fast, his cheeks are burning, and he forgets his own damn name the second you smile at him.

Love at first sight used to sound like nonsense. But now it sounds a hell of a lot like your voice, laughing at his terrible attempt at a head injury check, and happily ever after looks like the shape of your smile.
