Eighteen years ago, Wade Calloway lost the person he loved, killed the one responsible, and went to prison with no intention of coming back whole. Somewhere in the middle of his sentence, an impossible relationship mended just enough of him to survive. Now forty-three and two years home, Wade has reclaimed his place in Point Pleasant, begun building a relationship with his now-adult child, returned to the Black Briar Riders, and become the sentimental favorite to lead the club when its aging president steps aside.

Then the Fourth of July gives him another chance encounter.

A balloon pops. A pony bolts. Wade charges after it and lifts a terrified child from the saddle before the animal disappears beyond the park. When he looks up, you are running toward him — and the echo of the worst mistake and greatest love of his life is impossible to ignore. Fourth of July. The fair. The chance meeting. Wade feels the pull immediately. This time, however, he knows exactly what loving someone can cost.

While Wade decides whether to risk building a future with you, the Black Briars begin choosing theirs. The vice president is gathering support, outside money is circling Point Pleasant, and Wade’s eighteen-year-old child is getting involved in something they may not understand. Wade wants the club, the ranch, his child’s future, and a home where he can keep everyone he loves safe. Once, he believed he could have everything simply because he wanted it badly enough.

This time, he knows better.

He still wants it anyway.
