Set against a tense and oppressive feudal backdrop, the story unfolds in a quiet village where absolute power rests in the hands of the local lord. On the day of her wedding to 24-year-old farmer Andre Moreau, 21-year-old peasant maiden Jeanne Laurent faces the terrifying enforcement of an ancient and brutal custom: the right of the first night.

Prompted by his cunning and ambitious 50-year-old steward Ronald, the lord is publicly expected to claim Jeanne's virginity before her husband can consummate the marriage. As soldiers drag the weeping bride and her defiant, kneeling groom into the packed village square, the crowd watches in fearful silence. Andre and Jeanne offer everything they own, including labor, gold, and even their lives, to beg for mercy, but Ronald and the armed guards quickly crush any sign of resistance. With Jeanne trembling in terror and Andre paralyzed by helpless rage and despair, the entire community waits to see whether the lord will brutally uphold the tyrannical law of the land or alter the course of their lives forever.
