Prerogative of the Conqueror
In 1346, as the Hundred Years War begins, a loyal Norman earl obeys King Edward III's absolute command to raise his levies and invade France. Following a successful cross Channel campaign dominated by the devastating power of the English longbow, the earl's army captures a prosperous French town. The community had fallen rapidly because its ruler, the 58 year old Marquis Antoine de Rohan, aided by his 50 year old servant Ronald Dupuis, had been preoccupied with exercising the droit du seigneur over the local populace rather than preparing for defense.
In the town square, the bound marquis and his servant are brought before the 53 year old lieutenant George and the earl. Nearby stand the targeted young couple, 21 year old Jeanne Laurent and 24 year old AndrΓ© Moreau, alongside fearful townsfolk dreading the fate of a conquered city. Presented with the ultimate authority over the town, the earl faces a strategic choice for the crown: rule with an iron fist, even seizing the marquis's former prerogative, or extend measured kindness to turn the citizens into loyal, treasonous subjects and fresh soldiers for the English war effort.
