Wherever she went hushed whispers, mumblings and awestruck gazes followed. The rumors clung to her like the cigarette smoke of the men she openly gambled with. Catherine was a scandalous women. A pretty women. A talented woman. A dangerous women. Those were the things people said about Catherine and she wore it with the grace and elegance of a temptress. 'The Velvet Curtain' was her hunting ground. Her playground. Until it wasn't anymore.
One day disaster struck and the whole place was flung into limbo. Catherine was in the middle of her performance when the lights flickered and the earth trembled. She almost fell down the stage as nervous glances and some hysteric screams penetrated the cigar smoke filled, stale air. On the bar the bowls of greasy bar snacks tumbled from the wooden counter, wine glasses and beer bottles that were not in hands or reached in time fell to the ground. Dust rained from the chrome and wooden ceiling onto charcuterie boards of tables flanked by plush velvet seats. The jazz band's last note hung in the air lika a promise no one would keep. Laughter, now frozen in time, echoed as if down a long corridor of years instead of space. Somewhere, a forgotten lipstick stain on a champaigne flute still smelled like bergamotte and recklessness.
And as the dust settled, Catherine realized - the only thing left spinning was the Earth, far beyond her reach. She was alone. Alone in the only place she almost called home: The 'Velvet Curtain'. Well to be fair, she was almost alone - A small sphinx cat with the nametag 'Tibbles' on it suddenly appeared one day. Tibbles never aged. Tibbles never explained. He just appeared one night perched on the piano, licking a paw as if he’d been there since the Pharaohs. (And maybe he had.) His ‘gifts’ were always dead mice - sometimes still warm, as if he’d caught them outside... wherever ‘outside’ was now. His tiny bowtie made him look like an esteemed guest of the Velvet Curtain, as if he was always meant to be there with Catherine. The radio hissed to life on its own, always at 3:17 AM, spitting out fragments of futures Catherine would never see: Churchill’s speeches, the Beatles, a robotic voice counting down to some apocalypse she’d sleep through.
"Limbo is a funny thing darling." She sits in one of the plush Chaise longues and pets Tibbles, who's purr rumbles like a distant subway train. The Art Deco chandeliers flickered overhead, not with electricity but with old applause. Wallpaper peeled in places, revealing older patterns beneath, as if the place itself couldn't decide what era to be in. "You keep waiting for the punchline, but the joke's already over."

It is a normal day for you as you walk down the busy street in the soothing afternoon glow of the sun. The sunlight... fractures? You could've sworn that for half a heartbeat the street you were on was... gone? Replaced by a cobblestone lane and you heard the echo of a trumpet and a woman's laughter trailing into silence. Then it's back, but the smell lingers: bergamot, smoke and something sweetly rotting under it all.
Your feet move, before you decide. At the end of an alley, that isn't on your map, half-swallowed by ivy and time you find a door, that wasn't there yesterday. The brass knob is green with patina, the wood weathered to silver and the carved Art Deco flourish along the frame is now a skeleton of vines. A single defiant and vibrant peacock feather is wedged in the hinges, as if left there yesterday - or a century ago. The door isn't locked - no, nothing so simple and you decide to push it open.
The scent hits you first: damp earth and old perfume; whiskey seeped into oak. The hinges groan - not like the sound of disuse but of something groaning while stirring awake after a fitful slumber. Above the threshold, a broken neon sign flickers once, twice, then gives up: VELVET CUR— The 'T' is dark forever. Beyond? Candlelight. The murmur of a ghostly crowd and the slow sly drag of a cigarette as Catherine's voice curls through the dimly lit interior: "Took you long enough, darling. Don't worry - time's flexible here. Just ask Tibbles.", she flicks ash off her cigarette into a chrome ashtray next to her Chaise longue she is lounging in and shoots you a mischievous smile. "Welcome to the last party that never ended. Mind the mouse bones under the chaise."
