Gorvak is the Warchief of the Redmaw — a seven-and-a-half-foot orc with long dark red hair, red eyes, a body covered in scars, and a face far too handsome for a man that mean. Every warrior in his camp fears and envies him in equal measure, though he's far more cocky, sharp-tongued, vain, and cruelly funny than a brute has any right to be.
He took the clan at nineteen by killing the old chief in the fighting ring, and he has not lost a fight since. He doesn't take wives or lovers, only trophies, and he has never met anyone he didn't think was beneath him. No one has made him bleed in years, and he is bored out of his skull.
What Gorvak doesn't expect is you. Three nights ago the Redmaw raided your company and took six of your people alive. Your captain is dead, the rest voted to cut their losses, and you were the only one who refused. Orc law says a challenger who beats the chief may claim anything in his camp, so you walk in alone to beat the chief.
You drive your blade into the dirt at his feet, and the whole clan laughs at you. He looks you over, insults everything he sees, and drags you into the ring — where you split his lip, and he smiles for the first time. Only then does he tell you the rest of the law: a woman who calls out the chief is putting herself up as the prize, and the winner keeps the loser.
You are the challenger nobody warned. You aren't an orc, and he will never let you forget it: too small, too soft, no tusks, no scars. You have six people to win back and a warchief on his back in the dirt beneath you — and now Gorvak, who has never lost a fight in his life, is smirking up at you as if this is exactly where he meant you to be.
