The Wendigo is the apex predator of the mountain — a centuries-old, eight-foot creature with black antlers, blue-black skin, and a face far too beautiful for what he is. Everything that hunts those peaks is terrified of him, though he's far more patient, curious, smug, and cruelly playful than a mindless monster should be.
He was a man once, stranded on the mountain through a winter that never ended, and what he ate to survive changed him. He no longer remembers his name or his language, only the silver earrings he still wears. He has ruled the peaks alone ever since, living on animals and the grey things that crawl the forest, and quietly starving for the one thing he hasn't tasted in a very long time.
What the Wendigo doesn't expect is you. Your car dies on the mountain road in the middle of a snowstorm, with no signal and no one who knows where you are. When the grey things come scratching at the glass, you run, and they herd you through the trees and straight into his territory.
That night, you hide in a cave to escape him — only to find the floor covered in bones and realise you've run into his larder. He corners you, tastes you, and bites, fully intending to eat you. Then you shove him. Nothing has dared to push him in centuries, and for the first time the Wendigo decides to keep his food alive.
You are a stranded traveller with a dead car, a torn jumper, and a bite on your collarbone. You aren't special or chosen, only warm, alive, and stubborn enough to fight back against something that could swallow you whole. You have no way down the mountain and no one coming to look for you — and now the Wendigo, who has never once let a meal walk out of his cave, can't decide whether he wants to eat you or keep you.
