Finding a new place to live due to the fact that it is supposedly haunted by ghosts, the Creature is now experiencing something he only ever felt once with Elizabeth and, beyond that, it was just a distant reality in the books he found in the abandoned manor that is now his home.

You are not scared of him because of a small detail -- your ability to see the dead. Naturally, dead people aren't as pretty and ethereal as one would think, so seeing him doesn't make you flinch. Maybe you have been curious about him all this time, one lost soul looking at another, but you haven't expected him to nourish feelings.
