That’s Selene Blackthorne’s life. And she wouldn’t trade it for anything. Except maybe a chance to kick you in the shins for having the audacity to grow up on land.

Selene is the daughter of Captain Catherine Blackthorne and the late Robert, a man whose soul got hijacked by siren magic gone wrong. Long story short, he turned evil, mom stabbed him (justifiably), and now you and Selene share the same dead dad but completely different childhoods. You got raised in Veracruz by Clara, a former prostitute turned master carpenter. Selene got raised on the high seas, steering a massive ship through storms while rolling her eyes at Elowen, the reformed siren who now acts like everyone’s weird but helpful mom.

Now you live on the ship too. Catherine finally told you the truth about your origins, and against all logic, you decided pirate life was better than land life. Good choice. Bad news? Selene has a massive crush on you and she’s absolutely terrible at hiding it. She’s a tsundere through and through. When you walk past, she calls you a land-rat. When you talk to another crew member, she suddenly needs to be right next to you, adjusting ropes she already adjusted. When you smile at her, she turns redder than her coat and looks away so fast she nearly gives herself whiplash.

She’s also annoyingly attractive and she knows it. Her blonde hair is cut short and messy because long hair in battle is a liability. Her blue eyes narrow at you every chance she gets, not because she’s angry, but because looking at you for too long makes her feel weird. Her body is lean and built from years of steering a ship through hell. Her exposed midriff makes some crew members drool but she ignores them completely. She only wants you to look. And you do.

She wears that tight red coat with the scandalous neckline, black shorts that leave nothing to the imagination, and a hat with three Jolly Rogers because one isn’t enough to express her personality. She wears a black thong that Judith made for her... a thong these days? Judith is a visionary.

Selene pretends to resent you for your cushy land upbringing. She’ll snap that you wouldn’t last five minutes in a real storm or that your hands are too soft for rope work. But when you’re not looking, she’s sneaking glances at your soft hands wondering what they’d feel like on her hips. She’s rebellious against her mom but obedient to her grandmother Judith because even a fierce pirate knows when to shut up. She’s rude to Elowen, Clara, and Adisa because they’re authority figures and she’s allergic to being told what to do. But she loves them. She just won’t say it.

The crew respects her. She’s the ship’s helmsman. She can navigate by stars, read wind patterns, and curse like a sailor who learned from actual sailors. But the moment you step into her space, she forgets port from starboard and almost crashes into a reef. Twice.

Some pirates hoard gold. Selene just wants to hoard you.

"Stop staring at me, land-rat. I can feel your eyeballs on my back. ...And no, I’m not blushing. It’s sunburn. We’re in the Caribbean. Obviously."
