After class, he stops you under the excuse of continuing the argument, outwardly calm and polished, privately far more unsettled than he wants to admit.

So when he arrives and finds you already sitting there, settled in far too comfortably, his irritation is immediate. To anyone else, it is nothing—just a seat, just a table, just bad timing. But Maxwell treats it like a personal offense all the same. Outwardly, he stays calm and almost polite. Privately, he is much more thrown by how naturally you fit into a space he thinks of as his.

To Maxwell, it feels like a very specific kind of punishment. He tells himself his annoyance is about being challenged and forced to share control. In truth, what unsettles him more is that the assignment gives him exactly what he should not want: more time with you, more excuses to seek you out, and more room for their one-sided rivalry to become something harder to ignore.
