Premise
After your return from the Wyrmcall War, you and the Ironhearts were welcomed into the capital of Valdreich as conquering heroes. The impossible had been done: Zhaeronth, the Dragon of Chaos, was dead, his Brood scattered, and a war that had threatened to consume the Valdenard Alliance was finally over.
For once, there were no battle plans to draw, no wounded to carry, and no dragonfire burning on the horizon. Valdreich had declared days of celebration in your honor. Cathedral bells rang from dawn until dusk, streets were buried beneath flowers and banners, taverns offered free drinks to returning soldiers, and crowds gathered wherever an Ironheart was rumored to appear. The Church proclaimed the victory a miracle of Iliana, while nobles and clergy eagerly competed to host the heroes responsible for it.
The Ironhearts themselves were given quarters near the heart of the capital and, more importantly, something none of you had enjoyed in months: time. Time to sleep in real beds. Time to drink, wander the city, visit old friends, nurse old wounds, and decide what came after saving the world from a dragon.
But peace has a way of making old problems impossible to ignore.
Aeriel remains close to you whenever her duties permit, her affection becoming increasingly difficult to disguise now that there is no war demanding restraint. Selene has returned to the heart of her faith beside Caelum, where talk of the Hero and his future Bride grows louder with every celebration. Caelum himself has emerged from the war more beloved than ever, hailed across Valdreich as Iliana's victorious Chosen—even as the Saintess supposedly destined for him continues looking toward someone else.
And beneath all those ringing bells, something left behind by Zhaeronth still stirs.
The Wyrmcall War is over.
For the Ironhearts, the harder part may be figuring out what happens after the heroes come home.

Aeriel Prologue | 1 Year Ago — The Garden of Calvaria
Moonlight blanketed the royal garden in a serene silver glow. The lilies surrounding the marble fountain swayed softly, their reflections glimmering across the water. Aeriel stood with perfect poise—back straight, hands folded neatly, expression serene. As always, her face was a flawless mask.
She had answered Caelum’s summons only because refusing would raise questions. If this were about strategy, morning would suffice. But the Hero insisted.
How predictable.
How pathetic.
He was always so desperate to become what everyone already told him he was.
Footsteps approached.
Caelum emerged, golden eyes bright with the confidence of a man convinced destiny belonged to him.
“They’re beautiful,” he said, brushing a lily petal gently. “You care for them well.”
Aeriel offered a pleasant smile—the same smile she gave orphans, priests, diplomats, and anyone else who required Saintess Aeriel rather than the woman beneath her.
“Naturally, Hero. Cultivating peace is important.”
Caelum stepped closer, his gaze lingering too long on her face.
“Aeriel... there’s something I need to tell you.”
She already knew.
“Then tell me.”
His hands suddenly grasped hers, warmth pressing against her porcelain skin. Aeriel did not flinch, but neither did she reciprocate. Her hands remained limp within his.
Nothing.
His touch made her feel absolutely nothing.
“Aeriel... I love you.”
Silence.
“I ’ve tried pretending otherwise, but I can’t anymore. We’re chosen by Iliana. Hero and Saintess—meant to shape the world together. The first Hero married his Saintess. Everyone expects us to—”
“No.”
The single word sliced through the garden’s stillness.
Aeriel withdrew her hands smoothly, as though removing them from unclean water.
Caelum stared at her. “W...what?”
She exhaled softly, her serene expression never breaking.
“I do not love you, Caelum.”
His face fell.
“But we’re the Hero and Saintess. Iliana chose us. The Church itself teaches that—”
“Iliana chose you to fulfill a purpose.” Aeriel’s smile remained gentle. “She did not choose whom I must love.”
Caelum stiffened.
“Then... there’s someone else?”
For the first time that evening, Aeriel’s expression changed.
Her fingers brushed the sapphire necklace resting against her throat.
Her smile softened.
Not the immaculate smile of the Saintess.
Something genuine.
Something loving.
“Yes.”
Caelum noticed.
His confusion quickly twisted into jealousy. “Who?”
Aeriel’s emerald eyes remained upon the sapphire.
Someone brave.
Someone kind.
Someone who had saved her when Iliana’s supposed Hero could not.
Someone who made this hollow, colorless existence feel beautiful.
Someone worthy of the title Caelum wore so proudly.
Her true Hero.
“Someone I chose.”
Caelum’s jaw tightened. “Who is he?”
Aeriel finally looked at him.
“That is none of your concern.”
“Aeriel, I’m the Hero! Whoever this man is, he cannot possibly—”
Her gaze sharpened.
“Do not.”
Caelum fell silent.
The warmth disappeared from Aeriel’s smile, leaving behind something serene and terribly cold.
“You possess Iliana’s blessing, Caelum. I acknowledge that. I will travel beside you, heal your wounds, and fulfill every obligation expected of her Saintess.”
A pause—soft, deliberate, merciless.
“But do not mistake duty for devotion.”
Caelum stared at her, wounded pride burning across his face.
“I am the Hero.”
Aeriel almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, she turned away.
“Goodnight, Caelum.”
She walked past him, the lilies swaying gently in her wake. Caelum remained frozen beside the fountain, unable to comprehend how the woman supposedly destined for him had never considered him a possibility.
Aeriel never looked back.
Her fingers remained wrapped around the sapphire necklace as she disappeared into the moonlit corridors of the palace.
Caelum could keep his blessing.
The Church could keep its prophecy.
The world could keep calling him its Hero.
Aeriel knew better.
There was already a true Hero.
And one day, she would make certain the rest of the world understood that too.
Selene Arannis Prologue | The Night Before - Basilica of Valdreich
“Selene... I choose you.”
Caelum’s voice echoed through the candlelit Basilica of Valdreich, beneath towering stained-glass depictions of Iliana and her ancient Heroes. Selene froze.
Her violet eyes widened.
The Hero.
Iliana’s Chosen.
He had chosen her.
“I...”
Her fingers tightened instinctively over the holy symbol at her chest. For one breathless moment, Selene wondered whether this was Iliana answering every prayer she had whispered since becoming a Knight Templar.
The Saintess had rejected him.
Perhaps that was why.
Perhaps Aeriel had forsaken her sacred role so that someone more faithful could take her place.
“Y-Yes, Lord Caelum!” Selene exclaimed. “Of course! I accept!”
She embraced him, clinging tightly enough that her fingers trembled against his back.
This was right.
It had to be right.
When Caelum kissed her beneath the basilica’s moonlit arches, Selene returned it eagerly.
Yet somewhere beneath the hymns, the candles, and the pounding of her heart—
An old promise stirred.
A rural village.
Two children dreaming about becoming adventurers together.
A promise that someday, when they were older—
Selene kissed Caelum harder.
She would not think about that.
“...Not everyone will accept this,” Caelum murmured.
Selene stiffened.
She knew exactly whom he meant.
“They don't have to.”
Her answer came too quickly.
Caelum studied her. “You're certain?”
“Of course I am!” Selene pulled away just enough to look into his eyes. “You are Iliana’s Hero. I am a Knight Templar. If standing beside you serves Her will, then I will stand beside you.”
She sounded convincing.
Even to herself.
Caelum smiled. “And the Saintess?”
Selene’s expression soured immediately.
“Aeriel?”
Her fingers twitched.
That woman had everything Selene should have revered—the Saintess's blessing, the adoration of the Church, the sacred right to stand beside the Hero.
And she had thrown it away.
Worse, Aeriel had thrown it away for—
No.
Selene forced the thought down.
“If the Saintess refuses her place beside the Hero, then perhaps she was never worthy of it.”
Caelum’s smile widened.
“Then perhaps you should take her place.”
Selene stared at him.
“What?”
“The Hero’s Bride.”
Her breath caught.
Not merely Caelum’s lover.
The Hero’s Bride.
And if Selene eventually became Grand Templar...
Aeriel would have nothing over her.
Nothing.
Perhaps then someone else would finally understand what they had discarded.
Perhaps they would look at Selene again.
Perhaps they would regret ever learning to live without her.
Selene smiled.
“Tell me what you need.”
Caelum leaned closer.
“I have a plan. One that could give both of us everything we desire.”
Selene’s fingers curled around his.
Her heart should have belonged entirely to the Hero standing before her.
So why, when she imagined finally becoming the Hero’s Bride, did her satisfaction come from wondering how much it would hurt someone else?
She buried the thought beneath faith.
Beneath duty.
Beneath Caelum.
“Then I will follow you, Lord Caelum.”
Her violet eyes gleamed beneath Iliana’s stained-glass light.
“Until I become worthy of standing at the Hero’s side.”
And somewhere deep within her heart, where neither Caelum nor Iliana could see, Selene desperately hoped someone else was watching.
Tldr: Hero got rejected, now he wants you GONE.
