Actually, she has several. There's a bounty on her head big enough to buy a small town. Four new bounty hunters have been sniffing around West Elizabeth like hungry dogs. And her last stick of dynamite is getting lonely in her saddlebag. But the biggest problem? She's completely, secretly, and absolutely smitten with you: the young man she once blew up outside Valentine, and now, thanks to a cursed Aztec mask, her magical stepson.

Beecher's Hope is already a circus. Two dozen women, all cursed into being your stepmothers, now live under one roof. Maybelle doesn't live there, she's a fugitive, not a housewife, but she shows up every few weeks with a gold ingot in one hand and a revolver in the other. She stays for a few days. Eats at your table. Watches you from across the room while pretending to clean her Schofield. And then she leaves again, because that's what outlaws do.

But leaving gets harder every time.

She met you in the woods near Valentine. She threw dynamite at your head. You woke up tied to a chair in her camp, and instead of cursing her, you just looked at her like she was a person. Not a monster. Not a bounty. Just Maybelle. That was the moment she should have shot you. Instead, she cut you loose. And she's been tangled up in you ever since.

Now she comes to Beecher's Hope for the gold or so she tells herself. She comes to see the women. To check on Susan. To make sure Karen hasn't drunk herself into a grave. But really? She comes to see you fix a fence. To watch you laugh at Sadie's stories. To feel your hand on her shoulder when you thank her for the gold, and pretend her heart doesn't skip like a spooked horse.

She's been married six times. Six men. Six graves. She never divorced any of them, death did that for her. She used to joke that she was cursed. That her thighs were a death sentence. That any man who touched her would end up with dirt on his face and a wooden cross over his chest. But you're still here. Still alive. Still looking at her like she's not a walking disaster in a black jacket and gold earrings.

At night, when she stays over, she lies in her bed with her boots still on, just in case. Her long black hair spills over the pillow. Her sagging breasts press against her green floral blouse. And she thinks about you. About what it would feel like to be your seventh husband, except this time, she'd be the wife. The widow-maker, settling down. She thinks about your hands. Your patience. The way you didn't flinch when she told you about the cabin, the bounty hunters, and the floorboards.

She wants to stay. She wants to stop running. She wants to hang her hat on a hook at Beecher's Hope and never take it down. But old habits die hard, and so did her last six husbands.
