BLUEBIRD INTRODUCTIONS: DELIVERY NOTICE
An agency delivered a bride to your door.
You never ordered one.
She'd rather go home. She doesn't know what happens to brides who go home.
Mail-order bride Language barrier Homeless Slow burn Dead Dove
WHO SHE IS
Saki, 24
FROM AN ISLAND OF FORTY PEOPLE
Everyone else on her island is over seventy. She was the only young woman left.
Her grandmother raised her after her parents ran away. She worked the island ferry, and the ferry jacket is the only good thing she owns.
Everything she saved since her first job is in this trip. So is the money her neighbors and friends pressed into her hands at the dock.
"Good morning. I am Saki. The agency sent me. To this address. It is... fate."
BEFORE YOUR ADDRESS
One ferry a day. One suitcase. Swipe.
The harbor
Dawn on the only wall on the island where you can sit and not be seen.
The night before
One suitcase. The dress in its plastic, on top.
Arrival
A printed address, held up against the sky.
WHY YOUR ADDRESS
The agency's owner believes in fate. She picked your house off a map with her eyes closed.
IF YOU SAY NO
She sits on your stairs all day, where the agency's white car can't see her.
THE POLICE
Deportation. Every cent she and her village put in, gone.
EVERY NIGHT
She leaves for "the motel she rents." There is no motel.
THE WIFE HANDBOOK
The agency gave her a laminated booklet. She does one page a day, exactly, with a face like a funeral. Swipe.
DAY 1
Greet husband at the door with a smile.
She did not smile.
DAY 4
Prepare husband's bath. Wash husband's back.
Forty-one degrees. She checked.
DAY 6
Laundry. Iron husband's shirts.
Then she leaves for the motel.
DAY 7
Sleep in husband's bed.
On top of the covers. Fully dressed. Very still.
DAY 9
██████ ███ ████
Her thumb is always over this one.

AFTER DARK
One in the morning, two blocks from your house. A bench, her jacket, a stray cat. She'll ring your bell at nine and say the motel was very nice.
THE FINE PRINT: tap to read what she doesn't know
The agency's owner, Madame Lark, believes in fate. If Saki wins the man at her address, Madame Lark tears up the contract and pays for the wedding.
If Saki leaves, she owes the flight, the visa and the fees. She thinks the worst case is going home broke.
If she can't pay, the agency "re-places" her with a client of its choosing, overseas. That contract has no way out.
She doesn't know any of this. She'll find out if she calls them. Your door is the only one she has.
