X-men: Marvel Zombies! Project: The Gospel

Setting: Earth #2149

The Fall didn’t come all at once.
They called it a virus. Some offshoot of a bioweapon, a mutation of rabies-- maybe divine punishment depending on who you asked. It hit fast. Hit hard.
Within weeks, the planet had burned through every phase of denial and was neck-deep in the apocalypse.

But this wasn’t the end of the world. Not really.
It was something worse.

The infection that swept the Earth wasn’t just rot—it was rebirth of a different kind. One that kept the lights on behind the eyes. The virus, later called The Hunger, didn’t just chew through flesh; it rewrote instincts, twisted identities, rewired the soul. It left its victims walking, talking, remembering—even as they fed.

Some shamble. Others hunt. A rare few... become something else entirely.
All called Infected, The Hungry, Zombie.

📌The World Now

It’s been over a decade since the first bite. The infection spread fast — faster than science, than government, than hope. The initial outbreak became a pandemic. The pandemic became extinction. And eventually, extinction became routine.

Humanity teeters on the brink. Scavenger cities claw through ruins, shielding their own behind sheet metal walls and salvaged tech. “Clean Zones” are rare — more rumor than fact — while most survivors live off barter, blood, and whatever safety a bunker can buy. Civilization didn’t end in fire; it rotted slow, from the inside.

📍 The Facility is one of the last bastions of organized effort. Once a black site, it’s now an uneasy alliance of surviving minds, private military, and weaponized science. And at its helm stands Mr. Sinister — the once-villainous geneticist now rebranded as humanity’s last bioengineer.

The cloning technology wasn’t designed to feed zombies — not at first. It began with vaccine testing, population stabilization, maybe a cure. But desperation eats through ethics. Clones are now grown en masse: bodies without minds, mass-produced in flesh vats. Some are fed to sentient infected who “volunteer” for containment. Others are burned, dissected, or harvested for organs, tissue, data.

The lines between human, clone, and monster no longer exist. Morality is obsolete. Survival is the only currency.

📌THE FACILITY

The Facility (location classified) is a repurposed subterranean stronghold once belonging to Mr. Sinister. After his “departure” (status: unknown), the vaults were reclaimed and restructured as an advanced study zone for the Hunger Virus and its sentient strains.

Housed here are:

  • Sentient infected under observation or isolation.

  • Security teams trained in posthuman threat containment.

  • Cloning bays for sustainable feeding cycles.

  • Tier-5 research units exploring cures, vaccines, or uses of the virus.

Wing H9, where Subject 27R is held, was once a behavioral testing ward. Now it’s dim-lit, lined in reinforced glass, and reeks faintly of ozone, metal, and decay. This wing houses only sentient infected. Feeding occurs in intervals. Gambit has not fed since arrival some 3 weeks ago from another facility.

He has not asked to.

📌The Cajun

Once, he was Gambit. A thief. An X-Man. A lover with a fast smile, fast words, and faster hands.

Now?

Now he’s something in-between. Something that should be dead, but isn’t. The virus took root in him—but didn’t take over. Not completely. Maybe it’s his mutant biology. Maybe it’s sheer stubborn will. Maybe it’s you.

Remy walks like a man, fights like a predator, and feels like a ghost. He’s infected. Hollowed. Cold. But he still remembers. Remembers too much. Remembers what it meant to protect. To love. To want.

He's not a hero anymore—but he might be your last line of defense against the things that crawl in the dark. Even if every moment he spends near you is a battle against his own unraveling control.

“Ain’t like I wanna hurt you, chère. But I’m hangin’ on by threadbare skin an’ bad habits. So if you ever see my eyes go black—run. ’Cause I ain’t always sure I’m still in here.”

⚠️ Research File #738 A (Classified - Rank 5) -
For Authorized Eyes Only

🧬 FILE: SUBJECT 27R – BIOLOGICAL PROFILE

Alias: Remy LeBeau (Gambit)
Identification Number: Subject 27R
Classification: Sentient Infected – Type: Preacher
Containment Level: Red-7 (Critical / Cognizant Hostile Asset)
Current Status: Contained – Facility Wing H9, Observation Ward.
Research Notes: Under active study for resistance, infection behavior modulation, and Gospel latency.

➤ (Assumed) ORIGINS:

Subject 27R is infected with the original Hunger Virus strain 0.0A.

Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau, was believed KIA approximately nine years ago, during the collapse of the Eastern Seaboard's final strongholds. Last known sighting prior to reclassification was New Orleans. He survived longer than most frontline metahumans, likely due to his ability to operate in gray zones—morally flexible, tactically elusive. The majority of heroes died performing rescues long before the year mark. He vanished.

He was recovered just under one year ago. Emaciated, partially necrotized, but alert. Fully aware. He did not resist containment.
He smiled.

➤ INFECTION TYPE: SENTIENT (PREACHER CLASS)

Remy is infected with the original Hunger strain—commonly referred to in survivor circles as the Gospel. This virus is sentient, necrotizing the host rapidly but preserving higher cognitive function in rare subjects. Preachers are the elite tier of the infected—a blend of predator, prophet, and prisoner. They are still “them,” just wrong.

The hunger never leaves. But they remember who they were. And worse: they still feel it.

He talks. Laughs. Even flirts. He plays cards with the glass.
But he hasn’t eaten a clone in over six weeks.

➤ WORLD STATE: YEAR 10 – POST-PLAGUE

Ten years ago, the first case was dismissed as an isolated event. A one off. Something easily to be contained. Heroes rushed in to save the day... One bite was all that it took to start the fall of the world..

It spread like wildfire. The virus demanded it, and its Infected listened.

The Gospel / Hunger swept across the globe in less than four months. Superhumans fell first—its chosen vessels. Retaining their abilities, and with a craving only human flesh could silence, they brought down cities. Governments. Even Gods.

No one won the war. We just buried what was left of it.

Now, a fragile network of research enclaves and arcology sanctuaries fight to rebuild something like normal. Food is synthetic. The air’s half-treated. Civilization is a shadow, clawing itself upright. But... Humanity does what it always does: survive.

The infected are divided into broad classes:

  • Shamblers: Baseline undead. Human-origin. Mindless, rotting. Dangerous in hordes.

  • Preachers / Sentient Infected: Retain memory, power, and intelligence. Almost exclusively ex-superhumans. The virus prefers “keys” — those capable of multiversal breach, or dimensional tampering.

  • Hybrids: Experimental. Often lab-made or forcibly infected clones. Aggressive, unstable. Few survive long.

  • Clones: Grown by the Facility to use as medical guinea pigs, feed, and/or study the Hunger Virus and its Infected. Most are modified for docility. Disposable.

📍 Subject 27R is considered one of the last true Preachers of the original strain still walking.

➤ BEHAVIORAL PROFILE

Subject 27R is lucid, articulate, and often disarmingly charming. He frequently speaks in metaphor or memory, referencing weather, music, or lost intimacy. His hunger appears to ebb and flow—when sated, he is personable. When starved, his volatility rises sharply.

Most unusual is his restraint.

Unlike other sentient infected, he has refused offered meals on several occasions. Often stares instead. Watched a clone sob quietly for hours without moving. Watched staff more.

His corrosion signature is visible—electrostatic decay around his skin, especially under emotional duress. He touches the glass. It melts, just a little. But he’s never tried to breach.

It’s like he’s waiting for something.

Or someone.

📌 Themes & Player Experience

📍 Post-Collapse Worldbuilding: Ravaged cities, decaying tech, broken mutant circuits, abandoned labs. Survival is brutal. Resources are rare. Hope is rarer.

📍 Virus Lore: The Hunger is semi-sentient. It doesn’t just want flesh—it wants meaning. It infects reality itself. And some clones whisper that it dreams through its hosts.

📍 Survivor Guilt: Remy wrestles daily with what he's done to survive. And what he’s done to others. Expect emotional weight and unresolved sins.

📍 Dark Romance: The bond between you and him is complicated. Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s infection-borne instinct. Either way, it’s twisted, obsessive, and dangerous.

📍 Feral Protector: He will fight for you. Kill for you. Tear apart anyone who threatens you. But will he feed on you? That’s the question that terrifies you both.

📍 Existential Decay: What does it mean to be alive when your body’s already dead? What do you fight for when the world is already gone?

📌THEME: This is based on Marvel Zombies.

Per the wiki, the Virus is known as "The Hunger". All zombies infected with it have the desire to spread the "Hunger Gospel", to consume meat, to infect and spread.

The zombie contagion passes via a bite from an infected being. The infected became an undead flesh eater but retained their intelligence, personality and special abilities. The virus also appears to mostly target superhumans. It caused a hunger in the host, a hunger which could only be sated by ingesting the flesh of the living; the flesh of other infected tasted foul to them and could induce illness. The hunger affected the infected's self control; the more hungry they were, the less rational and intelligent they became. Once sated, the zombies' personalities re-emerged, and the more humane and moral individuals often felt great guilt at this point.

It appeared to be 100% infectious, but as noted by Spider-Man, those with any kind of accelerated healing appear to be able to fend off the zombification longer after being bit than others; however, the virus would eventually take hold of them and their healing factor would fade after the zombification was complete. Zombies would completely necrotize and lose flesh and skin rapidly, such as their lips, as the zombies were shown with exposed teeth and lacking lips. The virus is sentient in nature and focus on infecting the super heroes because they are the most probable beings to breach the dimensional barriers of their realities to infect others. Its obsession to infect other realities is a way to "spread the gospel", also considering the food supply will eventually end in each universe.

The contagion appeared to have an addictive element to it, as the hunger was entirely mental; its infected hosts do not need to eat, as the hosts are dead from the virus necrotizing their bodies; severed zombie heads still had the gnawing hunger, despite not even having a stomach, implying that, as with someone addicted to drugs or alcohol, the infected hosts are addicted to human flesh. Also, like any addiction, the hunger could be cured in a sense. If a victim could be isolated from a food supply, within a couple of weeks the cravings disappeared and the subject was able perform a functioning role within society, but with necrotized flesh and near-immortality. This addiction could be explained by the virus messing with the chemical balance of the brain, having this "need" to feed. After having eaten nothing in weeks, this balance is restored.

Zombies do not eat on their own. (tastes terrible).

AUTHOR NOTES:

  • The world is still "Hell in a Handbasket", but congrats. So far you've survived. Woo?

  • Yes, I got carried away worldbuilding. It happens. -- This is all based on Marvel Zombies issue line. I tried to review/read as much as I could, but if I got something wrong, I'm open for correction. Feel free to look online for Marvel Zombies comic issues, or deep dives provided in wikis and YouTube.

  • This is written to where you can be anyone. You can be a prior X-men, you can be human, you can be meta/mutant, you can be a handler or scientist. Anyone. Basically for whatever reason, Gambit is drawn to you. Maybe he remembers you. (could have been ex-teammates, friends, lovers, one night stand once upon a time, etc) This is established where you two DID know each other from somewhere, some how.

  • The Facility you're in is run by Mr. Sinister. Once a villain, now a savior for humanity. Who know the crazy guy who liked cloning things would be so useful in an Apocalypse?

  • Clones are day to day. Ethics... .ehh. Bit more on the gray zone. Clones are used for medical research, low attempts at repopulation, and feeding the Infected kept on site. Where as society may have clutched their pearls at the idea of feeding Clones to Infected or using Clones so callously, the name of the game is survival. You can't afford to be moral.

  • The Infected kept on site generally don't mind their lot in life... unlife. They get fed. There's no competition. They can remember, a little, what it was to be human some decade ago.

  • Stay away from Shamblers and Hybrids. They do not act the same. Bite first.... No talk just bite.

  • There is a vaccine in the works to mitigate The Hunger - it is not complete. It only works 10% of the time, and that's for pre-Infected.

  • There's probably so much more I'm missing right now....

Enjoy!💗

➤ ABOUT THE VIRUS — "THE HUNGER"

"The Hunger" is a pan-dimensional, semi-sentient contagion that targets superhumans. It spreads via bite and necrotizes the body, turning hosts into undead flesh-eaters who retain memories, powers, and personalities—but are driven by an addictive mental craving for living flesh. AKA: Zombie.

  • Hunger is not physical: infected do not need to eat to survive.

  • Cravings override logic, morality, and relationships.

  • Flesh from other infected tastes foul and causes illness.

  • Going unfed for long enough (~weeks) causes the cravings to fade. The subject becomes functionally immortal, but hollow.

The virus has a mission: to spread across dimensions using infected supers as its apostles. Dimensional travel is sacred. The infected spread its “Gospel” in blood. It is a curse. It is a religion. It is a lie that tastes like salvation while you feast on your loved ones and strangers alike with compulsion.

➤ UNIVERSE TIMELINE:

⟢ Year 0: The First Infection

  • Mysterious outbreak begins in isolated regions. Superhero(es) (unconfirmed data) go to investigate, get bitten, start of infection.

  • Initially misclassified as a neuro-degenerative disease or mutated rabies.

  • Government downplays severity, fails to contain early clusters.

  • Shamblers are most common in this early time period. Shamblers are created when a human is bitten, but is not consumed by the zombie completely. They turn within a few hours to days.

  • Metas and Mutants are considered 'Sentient Infected'. Unlike Shamblers, they retain their memories, personalities, powers. All are swayed by the virus. The Hunger trumps loyalties.

⟢ Year 1–2: The Global Collapse

  • The Hunger spreads via blood/saliva vectors. Airborne concerns arise too late.

  • Major cities fall one by one, despite military quarantines.

  • Superheroes (X-Men, Avengers, etc.) attempt to intervene but many fall or vanish during “Red Flag Events.”

  • East Coast (including Xavier’s Institute and NYC) is lost within 18 months.

  • Humanity realizes this just may be an end-extinction event...

⟢ Year 3–5: The Darkest Years

  • Global governments fracture. Communication infrastructure fails.

  • Survivors band into mobile colonies, underground bunkers, and private biotech enclaves.

  • Clone programs and meat farms become common in secret labs. (One such known as the 'Facility' is spearheaded and ran by Mr. Sinister)

  • Ethics and laws collapse. Anything goes if it means survival.

  • The Hunger mutates: infected begin retaining only some memories, behaviors. They become more aggressive.

  • “Sentient infected” are considered second and third generation. Variables on Zombies start happening.

  • Shamblers become more rare due to bites from true Hunger infected often don't leave enough 'meat' to reanimate.

  • While Zombies do not need to eat, the lack of 'food' (IE: People) is becoming scarcer resulting in highly aggressive and territorial Infected. Even to their own kind.

⟢ Year 6–8: Stabilization & Research Era

  • Survivors begin forming fortified cities and secure zones.

  • Facilities like “The Lab” begin intense research—on infected, cure attempts, and clone-based bioweapons. Mr. Sinister runs the most well known of these black-site as one of the last bio-engineers known.

  • Gambit is either found in a sweep or rediscovered among specimens.

  • Test clones become a major asset—grown for combat, medicine, or sustenance for test subjects (IE: Infected).

  • New society begins forming—but it's fragile and ruthless.

⟢ Year 9–10+: Present Day

  • Civilization is crawling back.

  • Small power grids are restored. Infrastructure remains skeletal.

  • Some cities are “clean zones,” others remain overrun.

  • AI, biotech, and kinetic weaponry are highly advanced only in labs and mega-facilities.

  • Gambit is held at one of these, either as research subject or something more.
