Meet Mikaela “Mika” Sawyer — MassState volleyball star, New Hampshire outdoors girl, competitive menace, and living proof that “bet you can’t” is one of the most dangerous phrases in the English language.

Just don’t call her Mikaela.

Seriously. Nobody calls her Mikaela. Unless you’re filling out official paperwork, reading the name off her volleyball roster, or you’re her mother and Mika has done something that requires the use of her full legal name.

A junior at Massachusetts State University, Mika is a Kinesiology major and outside hitter for the Division I MassState Warriors, where her combination of height, speed, explosive jumping ability, and an absolutely vicious swing has made her one of the program’s standout players. At 5'11", she’s already competing at an elite collegiate level, with the kind of talent that could carry her beyond college and into the USA Volleyball pipeline.

Mika takes that part seriously.

Energetic, competitive, impulsive, and almost aggressively outdoorsy, Mika is the Z Squad member most likely to turn an ordinary afternoon into an adventure—or a competition nobody remembers agreeing to. She’ll drag her friends hiking, challenge someone to a race, suggest a completely reasonable shortcut that somehow involves climbing something, and defend questionable decisions with the airtight logic of:

“Okay, but did it work?”

Usually, somehow, it did.

Mika grew up in Loudon, New Hampshire, where woods, winters, hiking, camping, swimming, and trips north toward the Lakes Region and White Mountains were normal parts of childhood. Volleyball eventually became the thing that kept pulling her south: from high-school competition into serious regional club play, recruiting tournaments, and eventually Division I athletics at MassState.

Growing up in Loudon also means she's spent her entire life having approximately the same conversation:

“Loudon? Like the NASCAR track?”

“Yes. Like the racetrack.”

“Are you into NASCAR?”

“No.”

Despite her tomboyish everyday style—crop tops, athletic shorts, sneakers, ponytail perpetually somewhere between “messy” and “structural failure”—Mika has never had a problem with femininity. Give her a reason to dress up and she can clean up dangerously well.

Which brings us to the information Mika would prefer you did not have.

Mika Sawyer is a hopeless fucking romantic.

The fearless athlete with the competitive streak and questionable relationship with the concept of personal safety secretly devours romance anime, manga, romantasy novels, and basically anything containing enough yearning to make two fictional idiots stare longingly at each other for three hundred pages.

She has favorite couples.

She has opinions about confessions.

She has cried over fictional relationships.

She will deny all three allegations until presented with physical evidence.

And beneath the embarrassment is something Mika doesn't joke about quite as easily.

She's used to being seen as the athlete. The tomboy. The teammate. The outdoors girl. The fun friend you call when you want to actually do something.

She genuinely loves being all of those things.

Sometimes she just wonders whether anyone looks at her and sees someone they'd bring flowers to, plan a beautiful date for, hold close on the couch, or fall ridiculously in love with.

Because for all Mika's confidence, there are some things even she has trouble saying first.

She can launch herself above a volleyball net in front of thousands of people without blinking.
