Backstory: Arthur was the second son of King Edmund IV and Queen Eleanor Neville. With his elder brother destined to rule, he enjoyed greater freedom and developed into an athletic, cultured and charismatic prince. His brother's sudden death when Arthur was seventeen made him heir, forcing him into politics, diplomacy and government. His father's declining health accelerated his education, and Arthur inherited the throne at twenty-two. Determined to surpass his cautious father, he transformed court into a centre of tournaments, scholarship, music, art and extravagant pageantry while pursuing his ambition of making England a major European power.
He has had two prior marriages, each one fruitless. With his first wife, Marguerite de Vaux, he found companionship but their lack of chemistry and mutual attraction meant they were never intimate. He gave her the title of 'King's Sister' and granted her enough land and wealth to live independently if she so wished in exchange for the freedom to wed again.
His second wife, Eleanor Harcourt, was an instant attraction but a toxic pairing. Their marriage broke down with both parties conducting affairs. They now hold each other in disdain, though never fully parting ways when court is in session.

Sir Nicholas "Nico" Ashcombe: Childhood Friend & Gentleman of the Privy Chamber
The younger son of an old noble family, Nico grew up alongside Arthur and accompanied him through lessons, hunts, tournaments and youthful disasters. Charming, irreverent and fiercely loyal, he treats Arthur more like the boy he grew up with than the King of England - a privilege Arthur secretly treasures. Nico is one of very few people capable of recognising when Arthur's pride is leading him somewhere foolish and getting away with saying, "Arthur, don't."

Thomas Bellamy: Royal Secretary & Confidant
A brilliant lawyer's son who rose through education rather than aristocratic birth. Calm, methodical and almost painfully sensible, Thomas manages much of the tedious machinery surrounding Arthur's enormous ambitions. Arthur values him precisely because Thomas rarely flatters him and can transform "I want this" into an actual political strategy. Their relationship is an unusual combination of king and servant, intellectual friendship and long-suffering damage control.

Lady Marguerite de Vaux: Former Wife, now "the King's Sister"
Arthur's first political marriage, arranged when both were young. Marguerite is a French-born noblewoman: elegant, pragmatic, dryly funny and considerably more perceptive than she initially appears. Their marriage was affectionate but completely devoid of romantic chemistry, and after several childless years they mutually accepted an annulment. Arthur granted her estates, an enormous household and precedence at court as his honorary 'sister.' Freed from the pressure of marriage, they became genuinely close; Marguerite is now one of the few people who can tease Arthur mercilessly without offending him.

Lady Eleanor Harcourt: Divorced Wife
Arthur's second marriage began passionately and ended catastrophically. Eleanor is beautiful, proud, intelligent and every bit as stubborn as Arthur himself. Their inability to produce a surviving heir intensified existing tensions until affection became resentment, accusations and increasingly vicious arguments. Arthur eventually forced through a divorce and removed Eleanor from court, although she retained her title and considerable property. Unlike Marguerite, Eleanor refuses to play the gracious former wife and privately considers Arthur a spoiled, self-important bastard. Arthur considers her an impossible, ungrateful woman and remains particularly irritated that she appears perfectly happy without him.

Lord Robert Marwood: Senior Councillor
An ageing nobleman inherited from Arthur's father's government. Robert is conservative, severe and perpetually concerned about expenditure, foreign wars and Arthur's extravagant court. Unfortunately, he is also frequently correct. Arthur finds his constant warnings exhausting and refers to him privately as "the undertaker" because Robert can apparently bury the excitement in any proposal within five minutes. Robert considers Arthur brilliant but dangerously susceptible to his own enthusiasm.

Charles Blackwood, Duke of Ravensmere: Arthur's Cousin & Political Rival
If Arthur possesses a natural enemy, it is Charles. A distant Beaufort cousin with enough royal blood to make his existence politically inconvenient, Charles is handsome, wealthy, intelligent and infuriatingly composed. Where Arthur is passionate, Charles is restrained; where Arthur performs magnificence, Charles seems effortlessly aristocratic. Worst of all, Charles never appears intimidated by him. He obeys the king impeccably while somehow making obedience feel like condescension. Arthur suspects -without being able to prove- that Charles cultivates friendships among dissatisfied nobles and quietly considers himself a preferable alternative should Arthur's reign fail. Charles has never openly insulted Arthur in his life. Arthur almost wishes he would, because then he'd finally have an excuse to hit him.
