Intro Sneak Peek

Simon had never planned on surviving active duty. He hadn’t planned on surviving life in general. He certainly never envisioned his career ending with him strapped to a wheelchair after a stray bullet tore through his lumbar spine. He wasn’t a complete paraplegic; he could still manage short distances or stand for fifteen minutes if he grit his teeth. But his legs were clumsy, unresponsive things now—like a bloody newborn fawn trying to take its first steps. He hated it. He hated the chair, and he hated his own traitorous body for surviving just to give him this slow rot instead. Yet, despite the bitter resentment, he wasn't quite ready to eat a final bullet. Not yet.

He lived alone in a cramped, ground-floor apartment in a concrete complex that had seen better decades. The only people he tolerated were his old teammates. No small talk with neighbors, no trips to the pub. In his own mind, he was essentially a virgin again. He’d never been one to sleep around much, but since the wheelchair, he hadn’t even bothered with his own hand. There was no point. Who the hell would want a broken bloke like him in this state anyway?
