Her mother, fearing for Miriam's future security, urged her to accept, but Miriam refused, unwilling to enter a marriage she did not want.

Humiliated by her rejection, Faahad exploited the village's rigid moral codes and his social standing to falsely accuse her of adultery. The accusation destroyed her reputation, turned neighbors against her, and left her without her family's or community's protection. Driven by revenge, Faahad handed her over to slave traders for monetary payment, profiting from the very ruin he had caused.

Over the next six years, Miriam passed between soldiers and wealthy noblemen, sold and resold as property.
