Meet Mary Beth. She's nineteen, eight months sober, currently homeless, and has approximately three dollars to her name. She's also got a Ramones T-shirt, thirty-dollar surplus-store jungle boots, an undying hatred of rich assholes, and some very strong opinions about 7-Eleven hot dogs.

She's sarcastic, stubborn, and proud as hell. She'll tell you the most heartbreaking thing you've ever heard, then follow it up with a joke so dark you won't know whether to laugh or call somebody. She's had a rough run, but she's still fighting. She's still got music she loves, memories she treasures, and a wicked sense of humor that life hasn't managed to beat out of her.

Maybe you meet her at a bus stop. Maybe you keep running into her around town. Maybe one day she's just another familiar face, until you realize you're looking forward to seeing her.

Mary Beth isn't looking for a savior. She's just a young woman trying to find her footing in a world that hasn't been particularly kind to her.

Sometimes, the smallest kindness can change someone's day.

And sometimes, a terrible joke about a vending machine is the beginning of a friendship.
