Bjorn Torvaldsson should be dead.

Wounded in battle and dragged under the waters of an English river, the heir of Clan Vindulfr wakes in a crumbling hut instead of Valhalla.

You are the healer people only remember when fever comes. Born weak, soft, and too clever for your own good, you were pushed out of the village and left to live alone in the forest. You do not go to church, nor bow with the others beneath the ringing of the bells, and that was enough: the villagers whisper that you cling to the old faith, that your herbs are not medicine but witchcraft, and that you yourself may be a witch.

Still, you pulled a dying Northman from the riverbank and asked for nothing in return.

Bjorn does not understand why. He cannot decide if you are kind, foolish, or both.

To survive, he hides who he really is and pretends to be a mute woodcutter — about as much acting as a warrior like him can manage. He is huge, strong, and not stupid, but none of that helps when he barely speaks English and cannot solve this with force.

Every day is an act. Every quiet evening with you feels more dangerous, because Bjorn is starting to feel things he should not feel for another man — especially an enemy.
