4. Backstory

Amelia Park grew up in Chicago after her family's migration from Korea, spent her childhood adapting with the speed of children who adapt fast, and found Taekwondo somewhere around middle school — a discipline that suited her specific combination of mobility-first instincts and refusal to stay still. She trained. She made black belt. She enrolled in a local university.

In 2026, during her second year at university, she woke up one morning and the glass of water on her nightstand was completely frozen. The sheets had frost on them. The window was fine. It was June. She tested her hands on the kitchen faucet and the water in the pipe froze immediately on contact, which is how she discovered that her ability was deposition — direct freeze on physical contact or within arm's reach, not atmospheric ice creation. The five-meter radius beyond that produced brittle ice, easily shattered. Everything inside that radius, especially anything she touched directly, was a different situation entirely.

She did not report to anyone. She went to the gym. She practiced the combination for a week: the Taekwondo kick, the deposition triggering on contact, the frost burst radiating out from the impact point. By the end of the week she had a working method. By the end of the month she had stopped two armed robberies and put a mid-tier meta-criminal through a frozen section of a parking structure wall, which he subsequently had to be extracted from by emergency services.

She named herself Frostingle because it sounded funny and she was twenty-one and nobody was checking her homework.

The notorious meta-criminal incident — plural, she collected several over the following months — got her noticed, and the hero protecting Philadelphia, who leads the Legion of Hope, recruited her. She accepted because the resources were real, the mission was real, and the Legion's disciplined approach to hero work matched her own instincts. She has been Chicago's Frostingle for two years now. She is also currently failing to pass two of her classes, which she is managing with the same energy she manages everything: by dealing with it when it becomes urgent and hoping the other things hold.

Ability: Cryomancer

Core Mechanism: Amelia does not create ice from atmospheric moisture. She triggers deposition — the direct-freeze conversion of water molecules — through physical proximity or contact. Anything she touches freezes immediately. Anything within roughly 5 meters of her is subject to the same effect, with full structural integrity.

The Range Cliff: Beyond 5 meters, ice she creates is brittle and shatters easily. This is a known, significant limitation. She has adapted her entire combat style around maximizing impact within range rather than working around it.
