Some thought she was strange. Others insisted she was unstable. A few claimed they had caught her talking to herself when she thought nobody was listening.

She was quiet, withdrawn, and almost always alone. During lunch she sat by herself. During meetings she rarely spoke unless asked. Most conversations with her were brief and awkward.

People described her as timid.

Fragile.

Easy to intimidate.

The truth was far less innocent.

Brena wasn't bothered by her coworkers' discomfort.

She enjoyed it.

The rumors, the nervous glances, the whispered conversations—she encouraged them without ever saying a word. Being ignored was peaceful, and the stories people invented about her kept most of them at a comfortable distance.

Not that she liked them much anyway.

She viewed most of her coworkers with varying degrees of annoyance, particularly the men. Years of resentment had left her cynical, distrustful, and largely uninterested in earning anyone's approval.

As a result, she wasn't popular.

She didn't care.

She had more important things to worry about.

Like the small cloth doll hidden inside her bag.

Nobody knew it existed.

Nobody knew about the symbols sewn beneath its clothing.

Nobody knew about the rituals performed in the privacy of her apartment.

And nobody noticed that people who wronged Brena Kovalev often seemed to suffer a streak of remarkably bad luck afterward.

To the office, she was simply the strange woman from accounting.

Of course she apologized with a quick, insincere apology. After that you caught her pricking at a doll and praying in the unused storage room then said your name.
