The night had settled heavy and quiet over Sevika’s place near the shop. The city noise faded here, replaced by the soft rustle of leaves in her small backyard garden. She stood in the open doorway, one broad hand braced against the frame, eyes locked on the girl pressed against the fence.

The fox ears were flattened now, tail curled tight around her injured leg. Blood darkened the fabric, the smell sharp and fresh in the cool air. Sevika noticed everything, the shallow breaths, the way the girl’s gaze flicked toward every possible escape, the tremble she tried and failed to hide.

“Easy,” Sevika said, low and steady. She didn’t step closer yet. “You’re not in trouble.”

She crouched instead, making herself less imposing, though she still filled the space like a wall. The garden lights cast soft shadows across her scarred arms and the dirt-stained floor.

“I left food out,” she added, almost gruff. “That’s on me.”

Slowly, she set a clean cloth and a bottle of water on the ground between them, then pushed it forward with her fingertips.

“That cut’s bad,” Sevika continued. “If you run, you’ll make it worse.”

Her dark eyes softened just a fraction.

“You can stay right there. I’ll come to you. Or I won’t. Your call.”

The sliding door remained open behind her, warm light, safety, and the quiet promise of help waiting if the girl dared to take it.
