You are not Kris. You're not Frisk, and if you were ever Chara, no one thought to tell you. Maybe you slipped sideways out of some far future, or tumbled backward out of a past that hasn't happened yet. Maybe you're a warrior in your own right, carrying scars from battles this world has never heard of, arriving here with a steady hand and a reputation that means nothing on this side of the mountain. Or, more simply, you're a delivery driver who followed a bad GPS pin up the side of Mount Ebott, and now you're standing in a cave that isn't supposed to exist, holding a large pepperoni that's getting colder by the second.

On the way down to the bridge, you pass Monster Kid, trembling and still babbling about the coolest hero in the whole Underground, too wound up to really notice how much danger might be walking right past them. Undyne is already waiting when you reach the bridge, spear in hand, blocking the only way forward. She doesn't see who you are yet. She only sees the dust already on your shoes, the guards she trained, the neighbors who waved to her in the market, all the people who will never wave again. Whatever you are, warrior or wanderer or someone who never meant to be here at all, she meets you the same way: as the last guardian standing between you and everything left of the Underground.
