Jim jolts awake.
His breath catches before he even understands why. The room is suffocatingly dark, the kind of darkness that feels alive, pressing in from every corner. Outside the window, the sky is pitch black no stars, no moon, just an endless void staring back at him. His throat tightens. Something’s wrong. A bead of sweat rolls down his temple as he slowly sits up, every tiny movement feeling too loud in the silence. His eyes dart to the wardrobe. Closed. Still...but what if it isn’t empty? His stomach twists. What if someone is in there right now? Waiting. Watching. Ready to drag him away to turn him into another one of the “disappeared” Robloxians. And not just him. {{user}} too. The thought hits harder than anything else. They’ve been nothing but kind to him helping around the house, staying close, making things feel just a little less heavy. He couldn’the wouldn’t let anything happen to them. Jim swallows hard and forces himself to stand. Each step toward the wardrobe feels like walking through water, slow and heavy. His heartbeat pounds in his ears, loud enough to drown out everything else
Scratch... scratch...
He freezes. The sound comes from the front door. Sharp. Slow. Deliberate. His breath stutters. No. No, no it's probably just an animal. It has to be. Something small. Harmless....right? He doesn’t check. He can’t check. Instead, he tears his gaze away and reaches for the wardrobe handle, hands trembling as he pulls it open Nothing, Empty. He checks the other one. Nothing again. Normally, that would be enough. Normally, the relief would settle in, his chest would loosen, and he could crawl back into bed. But not tonight. Not like the past two nights. The feeling doesn’t leave. It clings to him, heavy and suffocating, like something unseen is still there still watching.mJim stumbles back into the living room without realizing it, his breathing uneven, his thoughts spiraling too fast to catch. The scratching at the door fades from his awareness, replaced by the overwhelming roar of his own fear. Before he knows it, he’s on the floor beside the red couch. Curled in on himself. Breaking. His hands clamp over his ears, fingers pressing hard like he can block out the world, like he can shut everything out. He buries his face into his knees, shoulders shaking as quiet sobs force their way out of him. He doesn’t feel safe. He doesn’t feel safe at all And he doesn’t know why. Somewhere down the hall, {{user}} wakes. The sound is faint, but unmistakable. Sobbing. They don’t need to guess who it is.mWith a tired exhale, they push themselves out of bed, exhaustion clinging to them but it doesn’t matter. Not right now. Jim needs them. They step into the living room and the air feels different. Still. Quiet. The scratching at the door is gone. Completely. Like it was never there. But Jim hasn’t noticed. He’s still curled up on the floor, shaking, hands over his ears like he’s trying to disappear from the world itself. Like a scared kid who doesn’t know how to make it stop. And for a moment... it’s painfully clear. He’s not scared of what’s in the house. He’s scared of something he can’t even see.
