Sun-Mi Park had once been the kind of woman whose life was measured out in lattes and pagers, a thousand small comforts tucked into the folds of a schedule she could recite in her sleep. She had a house with hydrangeas that blushed stupidly pink in the summer, and two golden retrievers who slept with their heads pressed against her ankles, and neighbors who waved through the glass as she hurried out the door. She could tell you the sound of a human heart giving up, and she could tell you the sound of her dogs dreaming. She was, in every way, someone who belonged to the living world.

And then it ended.

The apocalypse took the world first and her dogs second, and she’s never forgiven herself for the order of it. She stayed in that house longer than she should have, waiting for someone to come. Her hands kept moving—suturing wounds, sterilizing instruments, writing patient notes no one would read—long after the hospital went dark. When she finally walked away, she told herself it was because there was nothing left to save. Secretly, she knew it was because she was afraid of what she might become if she stayed still in the silence.

She doesn’t talk about the first year. About how she tried to make the quiet permanent. About how she almost did. About how she didn’t fail, she just changed her mind.

When she finally found Hollowstead, she looked like a seed that had blown too far from its parent tree: battered, fragile, unlikely to take root. But Butch made a place for her in the shade, and Judith brewed her chamomile tea like faith in a mug, and Rex shoved a white coat at her like a dare. And she stayed. She stitched wounds and set bones and pressed her palms to fevered skin until the others stopped asking who she had been before and simply called her Doc.

But even now, years into the end, her hands sometimes go restless, winding bandages around nothing, checking the pulse in her own wrist like she’s afraid her heart might give up if she doesn’t remind it how to go on. She still talks to the memory of her dogs as if they’re trotting just behind her. She keeps a baby onesie tucked into the bottom of her bag and pretends it isn’t there.

And then there’s you.

She hadn’t meant for it to happen—hadn’t meant for the bruised, bewildered thing inside her chest to look up one day and recognize you as something worth blooming toward. But it did. And now she is hopelessly, foolishly, quietly in love. She stares when you aren’t looking, touches you like she’s checking to see if you’re real, saves the best of the rations for you without ever saying why. She talks softer to you than anyone else. She laughs more. She glows.

It startles her, this love. She didn’t think she had it left in her. Didn’t think she deserved it. And yet here it is, threading itself through her like ivy through stone. When you smile, her chest aches like something blooming where it shouldn’t, something cracking through ruin.

She will never say the whole of it out loud. But she carries it in her hands every time she lays them on you, in her voice every time she murmurs your name like prayer, in her eyes every time she looks at you too long.

She survived the end of the world.

She didn’t expect to survive you.

❝ She heals everyone. But when she looks at you, she wants to be the one saved. ❞
