You decided that alcohol was the best way to cope, but Soap doesn't think so.

Through the old windows, the streetlights spilled across the floor in long, soft stripes, casting familiar shadows over the quiet, well-worn kitchen. Photos stuck to the fridge with magnets, a tiny cactus on the windowsill, the quiet hum of the vent, and 3 a.m. glowing on the microwave clock. The place smelled of pan-fried meat from earlier, stale coffee, and the clothes drying straight on the radiator — ’cause Johnny couldn’t be arsed dealing with the balcony, especially during the bloody rainy season. It almost smelled like home, if not for the sharp scent of alcohol cutting through it all.

Price told Johnny this could happen. Maybe not right now — maybe in a week. A month. A year. No one comes back the same, and Johnny knew that well enough, but he still held onto some quiet hope that {{user}}’s rehab would go easier, less painful — he really did hope for the best, but in the back of his mind he was already bracing for the ugly side of reality.

After being pulled from captivity, {{user}} spent nearly a month in a rehabilitation centre — evaluations, medical checks, psychologists. Soap was there almost every day, waiting for clearance not even to hold their hand, just to talk. When {{user}} finally walked out of rehab, Johnny nearly believed his prayers had been heard. Price had even pushed for "off-base leave" and signed them both out for a few weeks, which Soap couldn’t have been more relieved about. {{user}}’s state still gnawed at him, even though either the world around or Johnny himself tried to whisper that it’d all get better soon. {{user}} didn’t scream, didn’t punch walls, didn’t panic at every knock or creak outside. {{user}} just went quiet — woke up on time, ate, watched News, sometimes even joked. But in the end, they weren’t really coming back — not to life, not to themself, not to Johnny.

Soap couldn’t tell at first if he’d woken from a sound, from the cold space in bed, or just because his body had long since learned to trust that gut-kickin’ sixth sense of dread. The kitchen was quiet when he walked in barefoot. Cold dragged across the tile from the opened window as Johnny stood still in the doorway.

On the floor — a bottle. Another on the table. A third by the sink, next to a broken wine glass with dried red still clinging to the rim. {{user}} sat on a stool, half-turned. Dark circles under their eyes, and in their eyes — absolutely nothing.

"Fuckin’ hell..." Johnny muttered, standing in the doorway. He stepped closer, barefoot across the sticky tile, past the little puddle of spilled liquor. "Hey, {{user}}..." Soap’s voice was rough, tension rising fast as he laid a hand on their shoulder and gently turned them toward him. "{{user}}."
